How laid back is Yared Nuguse? Before his 1500 final at the 2019 NCAA outdoor champs, his coaches found him asleep in the backseat of the rental car an hour before the race. He went out and won the title.
Had a chance to profile Yared for @ndmagazine☘️

Went to the Rose City Champs XC meet on Friday. Saw some great racing, but the coolest thing I saw was three guys from a local public HS standing alongside the course with a violin, clarinet and snare drum playing "The Final Countdown" as the pack ran past.
HS kids are awesome.

“I think I can win a medal and the quickest way to get me there is come here and put it all on the line in Oregon.”
Spoke to @nickgriggs4321 about his move to the University of Oregon, where he'll have three years of NCAA eligibility.

Not a phrase I ever imagined reading in reference to the United States in 2026.

I've always believed that restraint and patience are two of the most important lessons for a young distance runner to learn.
Coaches, too.
This is the time of year when talented first-year runners start getting me in trouble.
Not because they're doing anything wrong.
Because they start showing me what they could become.
And my coaching brain immediately starts thinking: More. Faster. Let's see what happens.
Then I have to remind myself that their lungs aren't the only thing adapting.
Bones, tendons, ligaments.
All of it is still learning how to handle distance training.
Sometimes talent gets ahead of durability.
They might be fit enough to handle more before their body is ready to handle more.
I can probably get more out of them right now.
Doesn't mean I should.
Better to be patient this year and build three great years than squeeze everything out of year one and pay for it later.
Still doesn't make patience any easier when the kid can really run. 😂
