Anyone fancy a night at the Artworkers guild hall in London on the 27th ? I along with some of my brothers will be expressing our doubts. Come along for fun, good company and a drink after. I doubt !! therefore I am.
Delighted to see we have been shortlisted for the Georgian Group award this year for our work to the new library at Apethorpe Palace.
Here on our Essex project we are nearing completion of this brand new Jacobean style ceiling. Using arts and crafts techniques each element is carefully hand made and installed by eye.

This is the result of someone trying to render a 15th century house with cement board and resin render. We are stripping it all off to replace it with laths and a soft chalk plaster.
Heres a little bit of pargetting we did ive the weekend. Hope you like it. The oak represents Autumn and the Holly Winter.
A few years ago now some of our clients visited Sizergh Castle on holiday. Seeing the ceiling in the first image they asked us to create them one like it in their own home. Images 2 and 3 are the result and one of my favourites to date.
During our work at Haddon Hall this week repairing the 16th century plasterwork in the State bedroom a piece of the plaster we removed delaminated revealing this surface of the pricking coat seen for the first time in 450 years. The texture tells us it was very hairy and sticky.
Hair. The most important component of lime plaster onto laths. In my humble opinion. Here’s how much to put in one bucket of coarse stuff. The hair is sprinkled on top the chopped in with laths to distribute it properly. On the trowel you should see one hair per mm.
I’m honoured to be presenting a talk on the history of English plasterwork and the plasterwork of Somerset at Wells cathedral next Friday. The event is part of a weekend of events organised by the Plaisterers company with the Friends of Wells cathedral, contact them for tickets.
Here at the glorious Castle Howard today to celebrate the Historic Houses and Sothebys award for the recent works to the house. Thinking about Mr Bagutti and Mr Vanburgh.
We are pleased to introduce our 2026 HuntsburyGaches scholar William Outram. Will demonstrated a strong commitment to continuing education and a good solid trade background. He will travel to Italy and the USA during his scholarship as well as some work experience with Mr Gaches.
