Headline in the State of the Game report is the fragility of the English pyramid despite vast wealth within the Premier League. The pyramid is this country's greatest cultural asset, on which everything else in the game is built. Protecting it should be the priority.
Today we launch our State of the Game report, which represents a critical step on the road to building a more sustainable future for a sport which is so fundamental to the social fabric of this country. It is the most comprehensive financial analysis of the English football industry ever undertaken, and the full report can be seen here – sotg.footballregulator.org.u… Read below as we summarise key themes of the report and highlight facts of the nation’s favourite game.

This guy utterly dismantles the populist politics of Reform and Restore in 90 seconds. It’s actually quite beautiful. Take decades of deep-rooted problems in Britain and convince people that a relatively tiny proportion of the population is responsible for all of them. Housing, the NHS, crime. Blame illegal migrants for everything. Suddenly, you don’t need credible solutions to the housing crisis, NHS waiting lists or crime. You just need increasingly extreme policies on immigration. And by the time people realise you never had meaningful answers to the vast majority of Britain’s problems, you’re already in power, handing out tax cuts to your donors.

If they’re going to remove 11 sketches from That Mitchell and Webb Look on iPlayer because ‘the comedy doesn’t work in 2026,’ can they please remove Mrs. Brown’s Boys too because ‘the comedy doesn’t work unless you’ve had a full frontal lobotomy.’

Atherton and Hussain are two of the best sports broadcasters out there, absolutely incredible on all fronts
Atherton & Hussain are writing letters, interviewing Imran Khan’s sons, raising global awareness. I won’t be surprised if they think the whole board and players are shameless for pretending the greatest Pakistani cricketer doesn’t even exist.

There's far too much "If you don't like it, don't watch it!" "There's something for everyone!" Which wildly miss the point that the Hundred, and franchise cricket generally, harm other formats and increase the gap between the top and bottom of the game

Well, if there was any doubt about how far removed the ECB is from the majority of cricket fans in this country, there isn’t now. The domestic game is not about six-hitting mercenaries & unwanted franchises; it’s about a pathway to the Test side & a connection to your county.

Richard is a bright, pragmatic guy and all of what he says is true IF you only look at the game through the lens of trying to compete with the IPL and other franchise leagues — but as county cricket shows, it doesn’t have to be that way. Cricket is best when it’s tribal and rooted in a sense of community and a bit of history. English cricket has that in abundance. If you build a community rather than just a brand, people will want to be part of that and they’ll pay to be part of it. The brand comes because of the community, not before it. It cannot be manufactured. We need to worry more about doing English domestic cricket really well, celebrating what makes it unique and root that in our communities rather than trying to make the Hundred the IPL Lite.

Prices in the UK just feel completely made up now. How does a weekend in England cost £700 when you can fly abroad for less? A return train to London is £160. The same house that rented for £600 is now £1,200. A full tank of fuel is over £100. Car insurance goes up 50% despite the same car, no claims and nothing changing. £100 in the supermarket somehow gets you two bags of shopping. And we're all just expected to accept this as normal? How did we get to the point where being ripped off became part of everyday life?

If only it rained half the year and we could store that rain for when it doesn't rain the other half. A rain reserve. A reserver. Or something. Oh well.

doesn't matter how good the players are if nobody cares about the result. the same people hitting boundaries in different shirts around the world is not why people like cricket
Ben Duckett tells @cricinfo he has been "so surprised" by empty seats at the Hundred this year: "You look at every side, and it's just world-class opponents. I'm so surprised that the crowds have been what they have." espncricinfo.com/story/ben-d…

Aww... the self-proclaimed "free speech champion" got his feelings hurt by The Economist's Editor-in-Chief asking tough questions. Now she's suddenly "a traitor to the West." That's some impressively thin-skinned behavior for someone who lectures everyone else about free speech.

Wimbledon, the World Cup, and the Open all done and dusted. An ideal time for Test cricket to take place. But instead we block out a period of the summer for this ridiculous tournament. Next Test starts on Aug 19, just before the new Premier League season begins. Well done, ECB.

Intrigued by how Argentina play this in extra-time. Think there's a chance they might try to slow the game down, break up play and take their time over restarts.

That Tuchel comments about DNA is ridiculous. It wasn’t DNA that left Mainoo on the bench and several of England’s most talented ball players out of the squad. Or who brought on multiple brawny defenders when England needed to keep the ball.
