“There are political repressions taking place. Now they’ve reached us.” Journalist and Nobel laureate Dmitry Muratov tells me how the Russian authorities have “strangled” Russia’s most prominent independent newspaper. Novaya Gazeta is closing down. #ReadingRussia

MPs’ staff keep our democracy running. They deal with constituents in crisis, work round the clock and have no HR that acts for them. Australia, New Zealand and the EU employ parliamentary staff centrally. Westminster should too. Back One Parliament, One Employer 👇

Octopus picked a union. Its workers picked GMB. Recognition isn't something a boss hands to whichever union it prefers. It's won by the people doing the work. Our members. We're not going anywhere. 🐙✊ #MembersFirst

90 years ago today, Oswald Mosley and the British Union of Fascists tried to march through the East End of London. Their goal was to intimidate the local Jewish population and promote their racist and fascist ideology. Instead hundreds of local people organised by trade unionists and community groups put up barricades and turned out in large numbers to stop the march. This became known as the “Battle of Cable Street”. A few years later, the same community rallied around their German neighbours facing reprisals during the second world war and in the 1970s and 1980s they helped defend the local Bangladeshi communities against attacks from the National Front. Today, local communities in the east end organise support for refugees fleeing persecution from all over the world, London will never stand for hate, racism, antisemitism and division. No Pasaran.

The best bit of Labour conference is when delegates discuss union business. It's nice to sit in & listen. Lifetimes spent pushing for better pay and conditions, the part of the movement that gets totally overlooked, but you can tell it's transformative for the people involved.

Great to represent @GMB_union at a @NewhamLondon Heritage event in Parliament today. We were proud to support the event as Newham is where our union was founded in 1889 by Will Thorne, who went on to serve Newham as a @UKLabour MP from 1906-1945. Thanks @JamesAsser for hosting!

658 employers. £4m in wages stolen from workers who earned every penny of it. B&Q. Five Guys. Care homes. Nurseries. NHS trusts. Every one of them called it a “technical” error. None of them made the error in the workers’ favour. Join a union. Get what you’re owed. gmb.org.uk/join-gmb

🧵 1/10 - In defence of @TulipSiddiq it isn’t a zero sum game, you can have both a successful career and be known to a CLP for some level of activism. Campaigning, talking to residents and understanding elections is a fundamental part of being an MP. It’s naive to think doing

barrier to delivering a few leaflets, going to the odd meeting or helping out occasionally simply isn’t true for most people. I once was on a campaign where a person had a heart attack delivering leaflets, his partner after seeing him in hospital, demanded to finish his (9/10)
