BREAKING. The Bank of Canada just raised rates for the first time since July 2023 The overnight rate goes up 25 bps to 2.50% after a full year on hold at 2.25% Governor Tiff Macklem said the inflation outlook has "deteriorated" as the war in the Middle East keeps oil prices higher for longer The BoC now sees inflation above 3% through the rest of 2026 and much of 2027, and only back at its 2% target by mid-2028 It also warned more hikes could be needed, though it will "proceed carefully" This lands just hours before the Fed decision at 1 PM CT A G7 central bank hiking because of an energy shock is the scenario bond markets have been bracing for, and the pressure on the Fed to sound hawkish today just went up
