@ZELA_Infor spent the week in Manicaland holding Alternative Mining Indaba sessions at Ward, District and Provincial levels where communities interfaced with service providers and corporates to promote transparency and accountability in the mining sector. The alternative mining indabas were convened in collaboration with @ZIMCODD1, @zccinzim and @CNRG_ZIM.
#Responsible mining and sourcing practices were topical in the sessions where mining companies were implored to prioritize community engagement for sustainable development as actively involving local communities in decision-making processes ensures their needs are met and fosters responsible mining practices.
Apart from corporate social responsibility (CSR), mining companies were advised to fulfill their tax obligations to support community development and contribute towards the uplifting of local economies.
Another topical issue was the protection of children's rights as implementing strict policies against child labor in the mining sector is crucial to preventing school dropouts and safeguard the future of the youth.
Focus was also placed on #gender equality matters in mining where participants called for the amplification of efforts to promote gender equality in mining by increasing opportunities for women in all aspects of the industry, from exploration and extraction to leadership roles.
