Happy 60th birthday to my quirky, beloved hometown of Washington. This brilliant piece from @MrGeorgeClarke sets out why it's just so special.
@AngelaRayner will kickstart economic growth and get Britain building again with a new generation of new towns.

This is a principle that is a hill to die on for me. It is absolutely essential that our special schools and AP receive the full allocation of the grant.

Scaling back of the primary curriculum.
Funding for SEND.
Investment in wider support services eg Surestart so schools are not the single point of support for families.

Proper funding for children’s mental health services and reducing child poverty.
If schools can stop replacing decimated social services, they can focus on teaching and learning.

Latest from me: on the worsening crisis in special educational needs provision, & what's really going on - councils' SEND budgets are now deep in the red, and Whitehall is pushing them towards cuts that will tilt the system even further into failure theguardian.com/commentisfre…

The support for SEND pupils is in complete meltdown. Huge increase in numbers of children needing support, LAs SEND budgets are millions in deficit & predicting vastly increased deficits going forward! It’s a crisis & schools trying v hard to support kids & families! What next?

Identity first language is preferred by 89% of Autistics as per the 2022 poll of over 7.5k of Autistic people.
Can people share this please, we’ve just had Autism Acceptance week and the amount of people including Autistics I still see using “People with Autism” is unreal. It really do be your own people 🤦🏼♀️.

How schools are measured based on these outcomes

We still try to fit square pegs into round holes based on such an outdated model. We need to get ahead of the curve for our young people.
Rant over!

I will bang on about funding as I always do, but not just for schools. We need to invest heavily in the services that support schools e.g. social care, CAMHS etc so schools can get back to having education as the main focus.

So I just discovered a TA I use to work with is now living in a hostel with her two children because her wages don't cover rent.
I am all for a teacher pay rise... but I will HAPPILY forgo it and see the money go to TAs and other underpaid education workers if it became a choice
