PAWS adoption means apply online, get approved, bring your whole household for a meet-and-greet, then your new pet is ready to go home that day.
Would you bring everyone to meet your match?

November is #AdoptASeniorPetMonth and we would like to introduce you to a very special gentleman... Moe, a ten-year-old Maltese (#PM8831) who's looking for his hero. ❤️
Moe has spent his entire life in a commercial breeding facility, where even his most basic needs were neglected. Instead of knowing the warmth of a loving home, gentle hands, and the comfort of being someone’s family, Moe has only known a life of hardship.
Now, at 10 years old and under 10 pounds, Moe is facing more challenges than any dog should have to endure. Years without proper medical care have left him with several serious medical conditions, including cataracts, a collapsing trachea, a heart murmur and he has unfortunately tested positive for heartworm disease.
We know this is a lot to take on, but we also know Moe is worth every bit of love and care he needs. ❤️
Despite everything he has been through, Moe still has so much love to give. He enjoys being gently petted and is slowly learning that human hands can bring comfort instead of fear. He needs a patient, experienced adopter who understands that trust takes time and will allow him to feel safe at his own pace. Moe would do well with a confident canine companion in the home to show him the ropes, but it is not a requirement for adoption.
To help support Moe’s ongoing care, the costs associated with managing his collapsing trachea and heart murmur will be covered, provided he receives his veterinary care through our Pet Health Centers.
Moe has spent 10 years waiting for a life he never knew existed. A soft bed, a gentle touch, a family to call his own. Things that so many dogs take for granted would mean the world to him.
If you can be the hero Moe has been waiting for, please contact our Port Washington, NY Adoption Center to learn more about giving this deserving senior the home he has always deserved.

Update: His name is Duke! And I’m so thankful to the wonderful @bestfriends pet adoption org for bringing him into my life. He’s the pup of one of some 18 dogs found abandoned in Arkansas, in a foreclosed home…the others placed with foster families. So glad Duke is with me!

Clara entered the animal shelter hoping to find a quiet way to soothe the constant, overwhelming noise of her own anxious mind. At thirty-four, working as a quiet librarian, the world often felt too loud, too fast, and too heavy for her system to process. Her therapist had suggested finding an anchor—a predictable frequency to ground her. That Sunday, her path crossed with Tom. Tom was a four-year-old Belgian Malinois who had already been discarded by three successive families in less than a year. Labeled as “too complicated” and “unmanageable,” he sat at the very back of his concrete enclosure, his powerful body completely rigid with hyper-vigilance. The volunteers warned Clara that he was defensive, that he wouldn’t allow anyone to approach his leash. But Clara looked at his golden eyes and recognized the silent, painful exhaustion of a soul that simply didn’t fit into any conventional human box. She didn’t force entry into his space or rush for a cheap connection. She walked into the kennel, sat directly on the bare floor, and placed the leather leash in the middle of the room. She closed her eyes and let the silence settle between them, offering him the sovereignty of distance. For long minutes, nothing moved. Then, decoding her calm, predictable energy, Tom took a slow step forward. He approached with surgical caution, sat gently by her side, and allowed her to clip the leash. During that long walk through the quiet fields, a miracle took place. The frantic buzzing of the world vanished. Clara’s heart found a deep, rhythmic quiet, and the massive Malinois trotted by her side without an ounce of tension in his frame. They weren’t master and pet; they were two fragile systems co-regulating each other in absolute silence. But after two hours, reality crashed back. Clara hadn’t prepared her apartment for a dog. With a heavy chest, she led him back to the shelter doors. And that was the exact millisecond her hesitation was violently erased.
Realizing the door was closing, Tom didn't just turn away. He lunged forward, dropped to his knees, and wrapped both of his front paws tightly around Clara's leg, burying his warm muzzle deep into her knee.
He refused to let go. His eyes were wide, pleading with her not to become the fourth broken promise in his timeline.
With tears flooding her eyes, Clara turned to the staff and asked for the adoption papers. She signed the registry with a shaking hand, refusing to leave his devotion behind a wire grate.
Today, Tom is no longer the "difficult liability" of the Lancaster shelter. He is simply Tom. Every single evening, he curls up safely at the foot of her bed, letting out a massive, universal sigh of relief before falling into a deep, peaceful sleep. And when the stress of the modern world threatens to overwhelm Clara, Tom gently places his heavy chin on her lap, pulling her back into the present moment. They didn't just perform an adoption; they rescued each other from the dark.
