Very good point that if the publishers are just having AI do all the editing and all the marketing, there's not much the publisher is offering authors here.
Sounds bad

Trad publishers right now they have the advantage 1) you get an advance for your book so you KNOW you are getting paid something and 2) their name lends your book "legitmacy." What happens if the publisher's reputation tanks bc they have no "expertise," just bots doing the work?

For @WIRED, I spoke with Macmillan and PRH staff about AI at the rest of the Big Five. I also spoke with bestselling authors who've gone to "war" with publishers over AI use and are now demanding disclosures and threatening to leave their publishers altogether.

"Several bestselling Big Five authors say their relationships with publishers have suffered over the past year due to AI use... ....One bestselling author says they received marketing copy that included AI-hallucinated quotes from their book, but the publisher insisted they were not AI-generated. “I was gaslit on all of it,” the author says. During a recent round of contract negotiations, another bestselling author says they could not get a single Big Five publisher to promise no AI would be used in any way on their books."

.@goodreads should crack down on AI-generated reviews. How can I think the "reviewer" actually read the book if they can't say anything about it in their own words? They're essentially fake reviews ruining the trustiworthiness of the site.

I think "YA has few 'boy books'" is a fair statement, but I am baffled by the number of people who keep saying everything from picture books to middle grade has none. There are many books in MG! And many that try to be "neutral" like IMPOSSIBLE CREATURES, which is big right now.

And by "neutral," I mean it of course has a male main character because that seems to be how it always goes. Male main character gets a girl sidekick or whatever.

I interned at a children's imprint at a Big 5 publisher in college & they actually told me they interviewed 2 guys they really wanted to hire (bc wow! guys in kidlit!), but they had to pass bc the guys couldn't say anything about kid books. They WANTED to preferentially hire men.
Is the "boys don't read" problem a matter of supply or demand? More than 70 percent of staff at America's Big Five publishers are women, as are more than 70 percent of editors and a majority of executives. Adam Szetela argues this is the single biggest transformation in the history of American publishing, and that an industry recruiting almost entirely from elite universities has narrowed what reaches the shelves. quillette.com/2026/10/23/why…

If nothing else, the people claiming there "are no books for boys or men" demonstrate that publishing needs to reinvent its marketing strategy. These books 100% exist, but everyone's always claiming not to know this.

Has anyone investigated whether the fact publishing is notoriously an underpaid industry is related to the employees being women? Men are very free to go make $40k (or less?) to live on NYC, but men are always telling me that's absurd and they wouldn't agree to that.

I called a restaurant last week to ask if they had anything gluten free, and they told me the dishes have have gluten in them, but "people eat them all the time and say they feel fine."

Apparently if you post that you disagree with how morality is portrayed in a book, you get accused of "wanting books to be religious instruction manuals." Look, I still enjoyed the book, but I also think its morality is completely wrong! Both things can be true at the same time!

I was very confused by REAP AND SOW as the Fairyloot YA book pick because it has a twenty year old protagonist and explicit sex scenes. It reads like an adult book to me. I just Googled it and it IS marketed as adult. So why is it in in a young adult book box?

I'm not sure how I feel about the trope in books where a character has been dating another one for a few years and is then shocked/annoyed they proposed. 🤔
