Federal Ammunition, Mossberg, and Palladyne AI have launched the joint development of SwarmShot™, a modular autonomous airborne counter-UAS system.
SwarmShot will combine Federal’s specialized counter-UAS shotshell ammunition, a lightweight Mossberg weapon module purpose-engineered for airborne operation, and Palladyne AI’s IntelliSwarm™ autonomy system, which combines BRAIN avionics with SwarmOS™ collaborative autonomy software.
“SwarmShot is a defensive application of the true autonomous swarming capability we demonstrated with the Army at PC-C6 and other exercises,” said Ben Wolff, President and CEO of Palladyne AI. “One SwarmShot-equipped aircraft is a reusable interceptor. Multiple aircraft operating through IntelliSwarm become a coordinated kinetic swarm. Gremlin-X gives us the first complete system, and the multi-OEM kit gives the partnership a path to scale.”
“Federal has always engineered ammunition around the mission,” said Jason Vanderbrink, President and CEO of The Kinetic Group. “Our recent counter-UAS work for the U.S. Army provides a strong technical foundation for SwarmShot. Working with Mossberg and Palladyne AI allows us to optimize the ammunition, weapon, and engagement geometry together from the outset.”
“This is not simply an existing shotgun mounted to a drone,” said Doug Bell, President and COO of Mossberg. “Mossberg will engineer a lightweight airborne weapon module around the unique requirements of recoil, remote actuation, reliability, and safety. SwarmShot extends trusted firearms engineering into an entirely new defense application.”

🪖 One operator. Multiple dissimilar aircraft. Detection to precision strike.
Northern Strike 26-2 brought together more than 9,000 military personnel for one of the U.S. military’s largest reserve component readiness exercises. During the event, the @armyreserve75 tested and evaluated more than 20 types of military technology, including UAS, C-UAS, detection, and contested logistics capabilities.
We demonstrated integrated ISR and strike capability powered by our SwarmOS™ collaborative autonomy software. SwarmOS's one-to-many wolf-pack teaming enabled a single operator to direct dissimilar aircraft working together on one mission. The ISR aircraft shared targeting data with our Gremlin-X™ mini-bomber, which performed a precision strike.
The demonstration showed how collaborative autonomy can transform individual platforms into a team capable of finding, tracking, and acting on high-value targets.

Physical AI is changing what robots can do in the real world.
In a new @TechTargetNews feature examining the growing role of physical AI, Palladyne AI President and CEO Ben Wolff discusses why this evolution matters:
💬 “But there are still millions of tasks that are dull, boring, and sometimes dangerous that humans have to do because robots haven't been able to deal with unpredictable, unstructured, or highly variable tasks and environments. That's where embodied AI comes in.”
The article explores how advances in edge AI, perception, and autonomous decision-making are enabling robots to take on increasingly complex real-world tasks.

Automation isn't autonomy, and that distinction matters on the battlefield.
In an interview with Breaking Defense, Palladyne AI President & CEO Ben Wolff breaks down what actually separates the two: capabilities like pre-programmed flight paths and waypoint following are automation, table stakes. True autonomy is a drone sensing its environment and adapting its mission in real time, within the parameters the operator has set, without a human on the joystick for every move.
That's the problem SwarmOS collaborative autonomy software is built to solve. Drawing on the same principles that let ants and bees collaborate at scale, SwarmOS runs entirely at the edge with no cloud connectivity required, enabling real-time perception, reasoning, and action in GPS-denied and communications-contested environments.
Humans stay responsible for the decisions that matter most, while the swarm handles execution in real time. As Wolff puts it, “autonomous navigation and mission adaptation, followed by human intervention for any go/no-go decision involving a kinetic effect.”
Palladyne AI recently completed a joint field exercise flying drones from multiple OEMs, all running SwarmOS, all managed by a single soldier, collaborating as one swarm.

"Autonomy" has become one of the most overused words in defense technology. In a new piece, our CEO Ben Wolff makes the case for why an automated system and an autonomous system are fundamentally different things, and why the industry needs to respect that distinction.
According to ASTM International standards, an automated system follows a process defined in advance, while an autonomous system has the authority to determine a new course of action when no predefined plan exists.
Waypoint flight, collision avoidance, formation flying, object tracking. All useful. None of them is autonomy.
If a machine operating autonomously cannot alter its behavior based on real-time changes, it is not autonomous. Ben makes the full case below.

Matt Muta is speaking at IMTS 2026: embodied AI for safety and throughput in hazardous finishing environments.
TAM is one of the questions we hear most often from investors, and one of the most misunderstood.
In a new post, Palladyne AI President and CEO Ben Wolff looks back on three decades of technology transitions, wireless, personal computing, smartphones, to show why traditional TAM models break down once a technology fundamentally changes what a product can do.
He also explains why the real question for embodied AI isn't how many robots will be sold, but what becomes possible once machines can perceive, reason, adapt, and act on their own.
