Labour's Jonathan Reynolds slams Conservative Helen Whately on #BBCQT
"Frankly there's no evidence to suggest that unemployed people spend all their money on fags and booze"
"It's just a way of you saying you don't like poor people"
My view: Whately shakes her head in disagreement, but why else would a party be so cruel to those in need if not because it sees poverty as a moral failure?
There is no evidence that people on unemployment support are frittering it away on “fags and booze”. It is a tired stereotype used to make cuts sound virtuous.
Benefits are already too low for many people to cover food, rent, heating and basic dignity, and as the cost-of-living crisis deepens, those cuts will mean even more hardship.
Is this really the country we want to be: one that
responds to people in need by making them suffer even more?

Donald Trump hates this photo of himself. We definitely shouldn’t make this go viral.

The revelation that Sunak has paid £1M in tax in the last 3 years 0.13% of his £720m wealth.
While the average person has paid about £45k or 14%, 100x as much.
Should open your eyes to just how much and how blatantly the rich dodge tax
Readers added context they thought people might want to know
UK taxes are levied on income and capital gains, not net worth. Sunak paid £1.05m in tax on £4.77m income over three years (effective rate ~22%), not 0.13% of wealth. bbc.com/news/uk-politi… instituteforgovernment.org.uk/explainer/weal…

If @Nigel_Farage loses Clacton, he'll have blown his only chance of being an MP and the protections it may bring. Investigations into his crimes will continue. If he wins, Standards Committee investigation will restart, hastening his prosecution. It's lose-lose for him

Who remembers when Martin Bell successfully stood as an MP to rid us of Neil Hamilton and the sleaze that surrounded him?
Let’s hope that, 30 years later, Count Binface can rid us of Nigel Farage and the far worse sleaze he’s up to his eyeballs in.

So Kemi Bay-denoch thinks Britain's problems go deeper than bus fares and VAT cuts.
Well, she should know.
She was a cabinet minister in the Tory government that wrecked the country.

Britain doesn't need more decisions made in Whitehall.
It needs more power in the hands of people and places that know their communities best.
That's exactly what No 10 North will deliver.

Question for the Electoral Commission
- there is a byelection happening in 3 weeks
- should a candidate be platformed by a news Channel in this way
- will GB News offer the same time slot to all 33 other candidates in Clacton
- are rules just ignored because it's Farage (again)

FIFTY MPs resigned from the government of walking scarecrow Boris Johnson in July 2022. The mass exodus cost taxpayers £423,000.
