🎤 What a day in New Mexico! Our president, @brett_tingley, was honored to keynote the Southwest IDA conference, hosted by SWIDA and the May Center for Learning. The room was full of educators, parents, and advocates who believe every child deserves to learn to read. 📚 Conversations like these are where change starts. Families are ready, and New Mexico is ready. So here's the news: we're working to launch a New Mexico parent advocacy group, and Santa Fe is going to be first! 🌵 If you're a parent in Santa Fe (or anywhere in New Mexico) who wants evidence-based reading instruction for your kids, comment below or DM me. Let's build this together. 💪 A huge thank you to Megan Rosker (SWIDA President), Jessica Wax, and Jay Johnson, Head of May School, for your warm welcome and for making this unforgettable day possible. ❤️ #ScienceOfReading #ReadingJustice #LiteracyForAll #Dyslexia #NewMexico #SantaFe #ParentsForReadingJustice #IDA

The Kansas Board of Education mandated that our school psychologists be required to take the LETRS literacy training even after their representatives sent a formal letter to the Board pushing back on that mandate. Kudos to Jim Porter & the Board. #ksed
School psychologists are some of the most powerful gatekeepers in a struggling reader's life. 🚪📚 They do the testing. They interpret the data. They sit on the team that decides whether a child gets help. Many districts assume their school psychs are already well trained in the science of reading. Often, they're not. Many have spent years in balanced literacy districts and haven't been exposed to the latest reading research. When the person reading the data doesn't know the science, kids fall through the cracks. Districts, it's time. Invest in deep, high-level science of reading training for your school psychologists. Our kids can't afford for them to be the missing link. Train your school psychs! 💪 #ScienceOfReading #Literacy #Dyslexia #SchoolPsychology #ReadingJustice #EveryChildCanRead @nasponline

“Find out what the child is interested in. Let the child bring his own book, the book he loves, you know, see if he can read, see if he understands.” That's how one critic of direct instruction says we should teach kids to read in Episode 3 of Sold a Story. It sounds lovely. But ask one question: What about the kid who doesn't have a book? What about the child with no shelf at home and nobody reading to them at night? The one who's already behind in 1st grade and knows it? "Follow their interests" works for kids who already read and have every advantage. For everyone else, it's a door that never opens. This is what adults want reading instruction to look like, because it feels warm, natural, and easy. But the data is clear. Kids learn to read through explicit, systematic teaching of how our language works. Every child deserves that, not just the lucky ones. When we choose what feels good for adults over what works for children, kids pay the price. Children over comfort. Evidence over ideology. 📚 #ScienceOfReading #LiteracyNow #ReadingJustice #EveryChildCanRead #ScienceOfReading

If you're poor and you want your child to learn to read, move to Mississippi. 📚 Sounds crazy? Check the Nation's Report Card. Mississippi's low-income 4th graders now outread low-income 4th graders in EVERY other state. A state that ranked 49th in 2013 is now #1 in 4th-grade reading once you adjust for demographics. How? They trained teachers in the science of reading, put coaches in classrooms, and refused to let kids slip through the cracks. So what's our excuse, New York? Nebraska, California, Iowa? Mississippi proved it can be done. Every child can learn to read. The question is whether the rest of us have the will. 💪 #ScienceOfReading #MississippiMiracle #LiteracyIsACivilRight #ReadingJustice

In Ohio, we're not messing around when it comes to how our kids learn to read. 📚 Districts still have plenty of autonomy in how they do it. But on the things that matter most, the expectations are clear: ✅ High-quality instructional materials ✅ Teachers trained in the science of reading ✅ Accountability for outcomes We've given schools the resources and the training. Now we expect results for children. How you get there is up to you. Some things you just do because they're best for kids. 💪 Thank you, @GovMikeDeWine and Director Dackin, for putting Ohio's children first. #ScienceOfReading #OhioReads #LiteracyForAll #ReadingJustice

The closer you get to the impact of illiteracy in people's lives, the less you're willing to tolerate and stay silent about.

When a child doesn't learn as a result of instruction provided, isn't that a question we should be asking about the instruction instead of making it about that child's inability to learn?
Sold a Story Season 1 felt like a reckoning over how we teach reading. But the conversation is much bigger. It’s about how we teach, period. “If the student hasn’t learned, the teacher hasn’t taught.” — Zig Engelmann Season 2 is here! 🎧 podcasts.apple.com/us/podcas…

Literacy isn't just a heart issue. It's a pocketbook issue. Some people are moved by heartstrings. Everyone is moved by their pocketbook. 💵 Here's what years of literacy advocacy have taught me: reading isn't just an education issue. It's an economic issue. A workforce issue. A national competitiveness issue. And it affects every American, every single day. Right now, only about 1 in 3 of our students in 4th, 8th, and 12th grade read proficiently. How do we compete with China when two-thirds of our kids can't read at grade level? We don't. Here's the hopeful part: as Dr. @LouisaMoats points out, research suggests about 95% of children can learn to read with evidence-based instruction. 95%. Imagine where the United States would be today if we'd delivered on that. Every child who learns to read becomes a stronger worker, a better-informed citizen, and a more secure family. Their success is our success. It's in ALL of our interest that children learn to read. 📚 👉 Share this if you agree literacy is everyone's business. #ScienceOfReading #LiteracyMatters #Workforce #Education #ParentsForReadingJustice

Sold a Story changed the conversation on reading. Season 2 is looking at what happened to teaching itself and why an evidence-based approach (Direct Instruction) was sidelined for so long. Trailer is below, new episodes tomorrow youtu.be/4YDq-AB_d2c
