Officially halfway through maternity leave (6wks).
How do women return to work at this point or even earlier???
My body is still healing.
Showers are rare, meals eaten cold, sleep not happening.
What we do to postpartum women in the US is insane & inhumane.

DYK patients with high blood pressure issues during #pregnancy
AND
those with no prior #hypertension can develop #preeclampsia after the #birth ?!
Consider a #bloodpressure cuff on your #babyshower registry. Not as cute as a onesie, but might be lifesaving 💙
Any woman can develop #preeclampsia after the baby is born, even if the #pregnancy was not complicated by any complications. #postpartum

Just a few points I made during my lecture today titled, The Importance of Black Midwifery: Then and Now.
The erasure of the Black Traditional Midwife was a calculated and strategic effort between White male obstetricians and White female public health nurses.

Time for a little #researchroundup: what's some new research in the maternal health space? 👶🧵

Women control 80% of all healthcare decisions, comprise the majority of healthcare workers, yet only 8% of VCs are women and just 2% of capital goes to female founders.
This has to change.

We mourn with those whose loved ones were injured, killed and traumatized by yesterday’s mass shooting in Highland Park, Ill. during a Fourth of July parade. Gun violence continues to turn otherwise routine childhood experiences into sites of terror and trauma. @illinoisaap 1/4

The just-announced U.S. Supreme Court decision in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization represents a stunning reversal of precedent that inserts government into the personal lives and health care of Americans. nej.md/3Aa5cKe

Research shows that 1 in 5 birthing individuals experience anxiety, depression, or mood disorders during or after pregnancy. For those in the LGBTQ+ community, getting treatment for maternal mental health is even more difficult.

The “breastfeeding is free” narrative in the midst of an infant formula shortage is a great example of public ignorance of what it actually takes to successfully breastfeed.

Super depressing walking through how the U.S. health care system treats women to a British women's health entrepreneur.
After I finished, she just said: "wow."

I joined @SenBooker, @RepRobinKelly, @RepBeatty, & @RepAdams to call for key #Momnibus & postpartum Medicaid investments to be included in full in the #BuildBackBetter package. We must act now to save moms' lives, advance maternal health equity, & ensure every family can thrive.

I learned from @TracyMacNeal that the leading reason that women end up in nursing homes is urinary incontinence. I received exactly zero minutes of counseling about this before or after my three labor/deliveries even though I had wonderful OBGYNs.

It’s Maternal Mental Health Week!
It’s natural as a new mom to want to turn all of your attention to caring for your baby; however, it's equally as important to remember to take care of your own physical and mental health postpartum. bit.ly/CDCHearHerWomen #HearHer #MMHWeek2021

Bravo. Today, @TJCommission began publicly reporting individual hospitals' C-section rates.
“By identifying hospitals with consistently high cesarean rates, The Joint Commission aims to encourage leaders to... safely reduce their rates,” said David Baker.
