Best college football team in 21st century to not play for a national title - 2000 Miami Hurricanes/2008 USC Trojans. As for that 2008 USC team, it was anchored by one of the best defenses ever assembled in college football

Oct 25, 1944. Admiral Halsey wins a crushing victory. And it's the most controversial decision of his career.
Japan's plan at Leyte Gulf depended on a decoy.
Admiral Jisaburo Ozawa sailed south from Japan with four aircraft carriers, including Zuikaku, the last surviving carrier of the six that had attacked Pearl Harbor. But the carriers had almost no planes left aboard. Japan had lost too many pilots. Ozawa's job was to be seen, and to pull Halsey's fleet away from Leyte.
On the afternoon of Oct 24, American scouts found him.
Halsey believed Kurita's Center Force had been beaten in the Sibuyan Sea. The carriers looked like the real threat. That night, he took his entire fleet north. Every carrier and every fast battleship. He left nothing guarding San Bernardino Strait.
Back at Leyte, Admiral Kinkaid and others believed a battleship force, Task Force 34, had been left behind to guard the strait. It hadn't.
The next morning, Halsey's planes tore into Ozawa's fleet. Wave after wave. The light carrier Chitose sank. Then Zuiho. Then Zuikaku, the last of the Pearl Harbor carriers, rolled over and went down. By the end of the battle, all four Japanese carriers were gone.
But far to the south, Kurita's battleships were attacking Taffy 3 off Samar. Frantic calls for help went out.
At about 10 a.m., Halsey got a message from Admiral Nimitz at Pearl Harbor. It asked where Task Force 34 was.
To confuse Japanese codebreakers, radio operators added nonsense phrases to the start and end of messages. The decoders on Halsey's flagship cut off the opening padding but left the end. So the message Halsey read ended with the words "the world wonders."
Halsey took it as a public insult from his commander. He was reportedly furious.
He finally sent his battleships south. They had been close to finishing off Ozawa's surviving ships. By the time they reached San Bernardino Strait, Kurita was already gone.
Halsey had destroyed Japan's carrier force. But he had taken the bait, left the beachhead open, and spent the rest of his life defending the decision.
unless you’re in the hospitality sections, a lot of truth to this. At Anfield I was in the Kop, the most intimidating part of stadium with the loony fans and I had to finish my beer in the hallway before i could go back to my seat.
all good this degenerate picking up the tab on the drinking
