Long hair holds deep cultural significance in many Native communities, representing more than just physical appearance. It embodies identity, spirituality, and connection to heritage. For generations, hair has been viewed as an integral part of a person's being, carrying historical, emotional, and spiritual significance. Growing long hair is a way to honor one's ancestry and the natural world. Traditionally, both men and women wore their hair long, caring for it with reverence and respect. Braids symbolized harmony, unity, and the interconnectedness of physical and spiritual aspects of a person. In some communities, hair cutting was reserved for times of mourning, signifying grief and emotional transition. The colonization of Native lands led to the suppression of these traditions, with boarding schools forcing children to cut their hair as a means of cultural erasure. Today, long hair remains a powerful symbol of cultural resilience and pride. It represents a connection to the past and a commitment to preserving heritage. Certain aspects of cultural identity cannot be erased.
