Great news. I just signed a contract with @politybooks for my forthcoming book, "Churchill as Appeaser: The Bulldog's Prudence, 1931-1955."
Excited to work with the great George Owers, aka @CapelLofft.
The contract was inked in Kruger National Park. I swear a lion roared.
Me in @TheCriticMag: Ed Miliband and his party's vote against airstrikes on Syria did not cause Russian imperialism in Ukraine. The notion that Putin was a light bombing run in the Middle East away from not seizing Crimea is absurd, but won't go away.

The Carney exclamation at the end is sublime
Rules-Based Homer? The Thin Pieties of Nolan's The Odyssey. My review at @TheCriticMag. The Cyclops is spectacular. But the legalistic preaching is uninspired.

Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey is full of thin pieties about the world order, argues @PatPorter76

It's going to be great folks. Patrick has actually done the near impossible: found an interesting and important new angle on Churchill, surely the most written about historical figure of the past 100 years

Cheers, Chris! Its an issue worthy of more debate. Anyone with a stake in defence and energy, which is everyone.
An important but frustrating piece by @PatPorter76 from July's edition of @TheCriticMag about the inability of the MOD to consider the trade-offs inherent in de-carbonising Britain's armed forces.

Title editorialised for impact - there are conceivable scenarios where it *doesn’t* really backfire - but thought the points warranted an airing (and even better in the US Edition, where the more thoughtful stripe of US reader might see it…)

I have an article on the US Govt’s latest salvo in its (erstwhile?) allies’ direction in the @spectator this week…
BLUF: it’s true that the Western ‘middle powers’ are a disparate bunch. But the more the US coerces them, the more it incentivises them to align away.

Easy to breezily assert that injecting a bit of tokenistic Western bombing into a bitter civil war would’ve somehow made everything better, but in fact, as @PatPorter76 argued a decade ago, the case for not wading into yet another intractable Middle Eastern mire was compelling…
This is spot on. The failure to stand up to Asad - for which Miliband bears much guilt - led directly to Putin’s first invasion of Ukraine. An appalling choice for foreign secretary. The Kremlin will be delighted.

Not going to spend time restating @PatPorter76’s argument, but his @WarOnTheRocks link’s here:

P.P.P.P.S. As @PatPorter76 remarks, the better - and much more basic - critique of the ‘League of Middle Powers’ (or whatever we’re calling it) is that the states in question are too disparate to achieve real alliance coherence: in size, interest, and (crucially) location.
