In molecular diagnostics, computer hardware is part of the test system under CLIA. Validated pipeline versions have to be tied to the assay that was run; the laboratory director approves code changes before implementation. Some accreditors require FASTQ, BAM, and VCF files for a minimum of 2 years. HIPAA requires audit trails for 6 years. Cloud and instrument vendors that store or transmit genetic information need a written business associate agreement even if they cannot unencrypt the data.
Schmidt, @PathByteChic, and colleagues (J Mol Diagn. 2025) map the hardware, software, networks, and interoperability requirements for bioinformatics inside a CLIA laboratory. The article is not legal advice.

In a study of professors, women got 378 new work requests over 4 wks vs 118 for men. Women spent more time on service, advising & teaching; men on research. Orgs should track who is taking extra duties & ensure they are rewarded and distributed fairly. forbes.com/sites/kimelsesser…

They’ll be over-regulated.
