The Muslim Takeover of America: Somali-born assistant superintendent Abdullahi Ahmed of Portland Public Schools in Maine has proposed changing the district animal policy because dog saliva is considered impure under Islamic ritual rules. ⠀ “In Islamic tradition there is always love for animals and living things and compassion for animals. With that being said, there are some ritual purity, that Islamic traditions state and Muslims exercise, so, for example, dog saliva is considered impure,” Ahmed said at an October 14 policy committee meeting. ⠀ He told the committee that students and staff should not be required to interact with dogs, that class pets should be avoided, and that activities involving dogs such as therapy animals or reading with puppies should be opt-in rather than opt-out. Ahmed said he consulted imams who opposed dogs as classroom pets. ⠀ The comments were delivered while he sat in front of an Iraqi flag. The district’s draft policy already requires administrative approval and certification for service animals, but the committee has not adopted a ban on classroom dogs. ⠀ #Portland #Maine
