We’ve spent years talking about the Dodgers payroll, but are we asking the WRONG question?
Milwaukee, Tampa Bay, Cleveland… year after year, these organizations find ways to compete without spending like the giants.
At what point do big-market teams stop obsessing over analytics and start POACHING the scouts from these organizations?
Maybe the biggest competitive advantage in baseball isn’t payroll. It’s knowing how to IDENTIFY TALENT that can compete when the lights are the brightest?..
Tucker showing bunt worth a lotta of million dollars per year and a reliever that can’t throw a strike is peak mid-major D1 baseball Baseball is a game of the little things

These guys are already launching moonshots for their new teams. Here are the home run leaders thus far from the 2026 MLB Draft.
Who else from the 2020 pitching class are you still buying?
Crochet is the clear #1. Strider and Detmers are the next tier.
Then you’ve got two quiet risers having real years right now: Cade Cavalli and Kyle Harrison.
Cavalli (22nd overall) finally healthy and sitting around mid-2s WAR. Harrison (the HS lefty the Giants paid first-round money for in the 3rd) posting legit mid-rot arm in Milwaukee.
Maybe they catch the big three, yet both are becoming exactly what this class was supposed to produce.
Development just isn’t linear.
Cole Carrigg was a signable 2020 HS bat.
Wyatt Langford was a low-profile Florida HS guy most national lists barely ranked.
Both took the college route. Both are running nearly identical wRC+ in the big leagues right now (Carrigg ~124, Langford ~122).
The 2023 college radars looked nothing alike. One had elite contact and almost no power. The other had loud tools and production.
Same class. Same age. Same current production. Completely different developmental paths.
Would Carrigg be the same player if he’d signed in 2020? Or did the three years at SDSU create the exact profile that is working?
The 2020 draft radar on Pete Crow-Armstrong still lives rent free in my head.
Bottom 5% production.
Bottom 10% contact.
Bottom 25% swing and miss
Top scale EV/Nitro.
High GB%.
Analysts scream “pass.” Scouts who bet the physical tools + launch-angle projection say “all in.”
Six years later he’s the highest-PV player from the entire class. 19th Overall...
