We surveyed senior healthcare executives across all markets, provider types, and regions.
What are the top things they are thinking about this year?
1) Technology infrastructure. AI and Automation in healthcare require better data integration, power, and security.

In our college house, a couple of the guys would have a soap opera or two on in the background while having lunch between classes. That was 30 years ago.
I was at the gym over lunch today, and one TV had soaps on.
HOW ARE THEY STILL THE SAME ACTORS?
After college, my child landed a job that had a portion of direct-to-consumer sales.
Hearing the stories changed how I interact with reps on the phone.
They're real people, trying to earn a living.
p.s. If they do well, always do the survey at the end. It helps them out.
Fascinated by "talent wells," the teams who come together for a brief time and then their members go on to do amazing things.
A few examples:
1981 SCTV cast:
Martin Short, John Candy, Eugene Levy, Catherine O'Hara, Rick Moranis. Those folks went on to win 11 Emmys and make movies that grossed a combined $12 billion.
1990 New York Giants coaching staff:
Bill Parcells, Bill Belichick, Tom Coughlin, Charlie Weis. 10 future Super Bowl wins for that group as head coaches.
2000 Paypal management team:
Elon Musk, Peter Thiel, Max Levchin, Reid Hoffman, David Sacks, Chad Hurley. That group went on to found Tesla, Palantir, SpaceX, YouTube, Affirm, LinkedIn.
Who else?
Job shadowing is underused, and so valuable.
If you can shadow someone before devoting massive time and energy to the field, do it.
And if you let someone who is just starting out shadow you, thank you!
Did one triathlon and one gravel bike race this summer. Thoroughly enjoyed training for and doing both of them. But nothing like fall riding when it’s purely about the love of being outside.
Would love to get a Tesla for FSD.
But 3 regular drives we do:
- 300 mile drive to my hometown
- 400 mile drive to my in-laws
- 1,000 my drive to our go-to vacation spot
Cold climates.
30 mins to charge every 200 miles, in rural areas, doesn't work. I think.
Counterpoint?
Love it when efforts like this get highlighted. So many lessons that go way beyond athletics.
As a college student, was invited on a retreat with the university’s board of regents.
Found myself on a stroll with the CEO of a fortune 500 company, an older guy who had an incredible career.
His simple advice for me?
1. Take your work very seriously
2. Find a great spouse
Finally saw Clapton play last night. Lifelong fan.
Much respect for how he operates:
- Comes out in a suit (no tie)
- True to his roots. 60% blues, 40% acoustic
- Makes his band the focus, not himself
- No showmanship or gimmicks. It's all about making music at an elite level.
Crazy to think that someday we will look at today's Claude reports and chuckle and feel nostalgic, the way we do now when we see a 1990s Web 1.0 content website.
I went to a small D3 school, and wouldn’t trade the experience for anything. Met my wife and so many key friends there, and it led to a great career.
But every fall, I kind of wish I had a big D1 team I was all-in on. I can cheer for teams I like, but it’s not the same.
Officially an empty nester, as of this weekend.
I know what you're supposed to say. "They will spread their wings, so excited to see what they'll do!"
The truth is I'm really going to miss having kids at home.
Prediction:
By 2030, the most common wedding registry item for young couples will be a household chore robot.
(Given cost, may be something all guests chip-in on.)
Fierce Healthcare's funding tracker is a great free resource on where early-stage healthcare funding is going. 3 takeaways:
1. AI dominates. 85% of the list.
2. The dollars are going B2B. Direct to consumer (in US) got 2.5%.
3. Notable outsiders are discovering healthcare. Spotify founder Daniel Ek raised $700 million.
AI is no longer a differentiator: Only 7 of 63 companies on the list don't lead with AI. The new mantras are "AI-native operating systems" and "autonomous workforces."
The money is going to B2B, not consumer: Direct-to-consumer only describes four companies on the list, none above $20 million. Compare that to 2021, when wellness apps and DTC providers raised billions. With the exception of Neko, every large late stage round went to enterprise.
Notable outsiders are discovering healthcare: Spotify founder Daniel Ek's Neko Health raised $700 million non-radiation full body scans. The founders behind Robinhood, Coinbase, and Superhuman are devoting energy to healthcare too.
Thanks @hughdsullivan for reminding me of this great resource.
Having traveled extensively for my career, two things I can say are:
1. There is something redeeming about every state
2. Any place you go has good people who are proud of their home
Hard-pressed to find a state that has no appeal whatsoever.
Hear me out:
If we are going to build massive data centers, at least put mountain bike trails and pickleball courts on top of them.
Not every metric needs a goal. Especially if it’s just an arbitrary goal.
Some metrics are simply for understanding your business.
