Incredible scenes out of Genoa, Italy, where the striking dockworkers have joined student protesters in a general strike against the cost-of-living crisis and the government funding war over education.
This is historic! Dockworkers across 5 continents and 113 ports are striking today to demand an end to their workplaces being used to transport bombs. This is what our rulers fear most: workers coming together to liberate humanity from capitalism and imperialism.

📷✍️NEW REPORTING SERIES📷✍️: “How to Build a General Strike: Dispatches from Ports Mobilizing for the October 30 International Day of Action” So stoked to launch this new series, in collaboration with @ProgIntl's "The Wire," to report on the fast-approaching dockworkers’ strike on October 30 that now spans more than 100 ports in 17 countries across four continents. I’ve been in Italy with the dockworkers, organizers, and flotilla activists getting ready to disrupt global supply chains on October 30 by refusing to load the weapons and cargo that make Israel’s genocide and U.S.-Israel wars possible. The journalistic approach here is “workers’ inquiry," where workers report on their local conditions, general strategies, and political difficulties, in their own words, for workers everywhere. First profile is on Livorno, where, as luck would have it, the @gbsumudflotilla’s Italian delegation was launching a solidarity action when I got in town. I sat down with Giovanni Ceraolo, national ports coordinator for Unione Sindacale di Base (@usbsindacato); Simone D’Aversa, a founder of Gruppo Autonomo Portuali (GAP); and Luca Poggi of GSF Italia. Video report here, written dispatch below👇 Please share widely 🙏

NEW: On Friday, dockworkers at 111 ports in 22 countries and regions on five continents will stop work in a coordinated strike against war, according to the most recent information from the organizing unions. More than 25 dockworkers’ unions have now signed on, from Marseille to Mumbai, Hamburg to Montevideo, Melbourne to Oakland. Days ago the count stood at about 100 ports in 17 countries, and that figure doesn’t include the dozens of unions in other sectors that have pledged support. Their demand is simple: no weapons and no military cargo through their ports. Nearly everything the world ships passes through the docks, and without the workers who load and unload it, nothing moves. In France, the main dockers’ union says the country’s ports will be 95% shut. Italy, India, Greece and Turkey face 24-hour strikes, and Morocco and Cyprus will see stoppages of up to two hours, with rallies planned in port cities around the world. In Greece, metalworkers, ship-repair workers and young people are joining the dockers, and in the US, ILWU Local 10 is striking in Oakland and San Francisco. The unions are working from the Istanbul Declaration, signed in May, with each one deciding for itself how to take part. They are also fighting for their own jobs, against cuts from automation and for contracts, raises, shorter hours and safety. The unions point to escalating wars in Ukraine and the Middle East and the danger of a generalized war. They condemn Israel’s new crimes in Hebron, carried out with the backing of the US, NATO and the EU. Israel’s lockdown of the city is now in its sixth day, with more than 3,000 Palestinians displaced, according to the UN. Palestinian unions have endorsed Friday’s action. In Italy, the fight has spilled beyond the docks. The union USB has called for a nationwide general strike. Last night, the Italian government ordered transport workers back on the job last night. USB said it would defy the order and accept the steep penalties. The unions are calling on workers and young people everywhere to stand with the dockworkers, saying “Ports for peace and the peoples, not launching pads for war.” I’m reporting from Calabria, Italy, and I will be in Genoa tomorrow ahead of the strike to report on the ground during the mobilzation.

Dock and port workers from 17 countries will disrupt and block exports to Israel on Friday, with workers joining from countries including Italy, Mexico, Turkey, the US, Morocco and India. Representatives from more than 100 ports will participate in the international day of action on 30 October, calling for an end to Israel’s genocide against Palestinians and “US-Israeli wars of aggression”. The Palestinian BDS National Committee (BNC) announced on X that workers will take action by “peacefully disrupting and blocking the transfer of military, energy and other dual-use supplies to Israel, including by refusing to handle such supplies”. Workers will also pressure governments to impose a full military embargo on Israel and end “trade, economic and academic relations serving its illegal occupation and apartheid”. Explaining the day of action, the BNC said that Israel’s “criminal wars” are “exacerbating the cost of living and economic crises worldwide”. “Military budgets are swelling in the colonial West, while families and workers struggle with the cost of health, housing, transportation, and education. Our struggles are interlinked,” it stated. A further 17 Palestinian trade unions and federations have endorsed the action, stating: “Our struggle for justice in Palestine is inseparable from the global struggle against systemic racism, militarisation, exploitation, climate devastation and all forms of oppression.” The day of action comes a year after dockworkers in Italy blocked the ports of Genoa and Livorno, with unions closing schools and stopping transportation as part of an Italy-wide general strike in response to Israel preventing the Global Sumud Flotilla from reaching Gaza in 2025. The flotilla was the largest ever naval mission to attempt to deliver humanitarian supplies to Gaza, with around 20 vessels carrying delegates from at least 44 countries. The flotilla was subject to drone attacks before being illegally intercepted by Israel in international waters. Those on board were detained and have accused Israeli forces of subjecting them to human rights abuses including assault, degrading treatment, and the withholding of medical care.
