On October 12, 2026, 15-year-old Maddox Larger and his 14-year-old brother, Grant, were spending their fall break near a pond when they heard a splash.
A stroller had rolled down a slope and into the water.
A grandmother was struggling to escape with her 4-year-old grandchild strapped to her back. Neither she nor the older child could swim.
The brothers didn't stand there watching.
They jumped into the pond and helped pull the grandmother and the 4-year-old to safety.
But then they realized something terrifying.
The 2-year-old was still trapped inside the stroller.
Maddox went back into the water. Drawing on his competitive swimming experience, he retrieved the stroller from roughly eight feet of water and freed the toddler.
The baby wasn't breathing normally.
Maddox remembered what he had learned in a school CPR lesson. He patted the toddler's back, and after a few attempts, the child began breathing and coughing up water.
Meanwhile, Grant helped coordinate the emergency response.
When rescuers arrived, the children were conscious, and all three family members had been brought out of the pond.
Police praised the brothers for their courage and quick thinking, saying their actions helped save the toddler's life.
The boys later received Distinguished Hoosier Awards in recognition of their bravery.
But perhaps the most powerful part of this story is what Grant said about the family.
