A single night of poor sleep can slash your insulin sensitivity by up to 25%.
This means even one bad night can significantly impact your body's ability to manage blood sugar levels.
But it's not just about how many hours you sleep—a new study highlights that bedtime matters, too.
Participants who slept between 4 and 7 hours each night had larger spikes and more variability in blood sugar (as measured by continuous glucose monitors or CGM) compared to those getting at least 8 hours.
Going to bed after midnight was also linked to poorer glucose control.
The worst-case scenario is less than 5 hours of sleep and a late bedtime. Interestingly, late sleepers who still got 8+ hours were somewhat protected, while going to bed early didn’t offset the effects of too little sleep—metabolic benefits only came with sufficient sleep duration.
The takeaway? You can't offset inadequate sleep simply by turning in early. But if you're forced into a late bedtime, prioritizing a full 8 hours of sleep can lessen the negative impacts on blood sugar regulation.
Another strategy if sleep isn't ideal? Exercise. Studies show that performing HIIT minimizes the effects of sleep loss on insulin sensitivity and other measures of metabolic control.
