Archbishop Cordileone offered Mass for the Latin Mass pilgrimage "Three Hearts" this wknd He warned that attacks on marriage are fuelled by atheism –– “This marginalizing of God from public life is happening in our midst – yes, in some more explicit ways – but most alarmingly by the destruction of marriage. “By wiping out the basic idea of marriage as the life-long and life-giving one-flesh communion of man and woman in a covenantal relationship, the image of God is wiped out from the face of the earth.”

From my Homily for St Frideswide's day (19 October): "Today’s saint is very much a part of that first flourishing of the Faith in Anglo-Saxon England. She was a princess of Wessex in the kingdom of Mercia, and her name is probably pronounced Frithuswith (rather than Frideswide), and she was born c.650. Like quite few other royal women of her age, she became abbess of a monastery she had founded with her parents’ help in Oxford, on the site that is now called Christ Church Cathedral. This suggests to me the close links between the Church and the political rulers of the time. But after the death of her parents, King Aethelbald of Mercia sought to marry her, disregarding her vow of celbacy. When she refused, he tried to abduct her so she fled to Bampton and then to Binsey. Aethelbald is thwarted when he is struck blind by God so he gives up. But a well springs up in Binsey, and people go to Frithuswith for prayers and healing, and she later returns to Oxford to her monastery where she was buried after her death on this day in 727. Later on, in the 1440s, some 200 years after the Dominicans first arrived in Oxford. St Frideswide’s relics are still somewhere around Christ Church Cathedral but they had been scattered after the Reformation and so they’re not possible to locate, but we I always try to visit the location of her medieval shrine, often bringing visiting friars and friends to go there and to seek her intercession." flic.kr/p/2sH4X2L 📷 The reconstructed shrine of St Frideswide in Christ Church Cathedral, Oxford; her relics have not been found but are believed to be in the grounds of the cathedral.

JUST IN: Vatican issues images of Pope Leo offering Mass today, as doctors report his continued improvement. The Pope celebrated Mass in the hospital at noon, in the presence of medics & nursing staff from the hospital & members of the Vatican City State Gendarmerie. "In his homily, the Pope thanked all the staff –doctors, nurses, and orderlies – for the work they do every day in caring for the sick and their frailty, and, in particular, for what they have done and continue to do for him." Also, today he performed blood tests & another chest X-ray. These “confirmed the continued improvement in his overall condition.” “Respiratory physical therapy sessions have continued,” doctors said. “His post-operative recovery allows him to carry out his normal daily activities completely independently.”
NEW: The Pope’s doctors again write to note his continued recovery on schedule. Today they stated: “This morning, the Holy Father underwent routine checkups, which showed normal results. The chest X-ray revealed good recovery of the operated lung. He carried out his daily activities independently. The physical therapy session included a full range of motor activities. Overall, his postoperative recovery is proceeding as expected.”

Cardinal Müller –– Therefore, when Mary is called “Co-Redemptrix” in Catholic piety and theology, this is neither a misleading attribution nor an enthusiastic exaggeration, but a truth objectively contained in revelation. Full speech on @PerMariam
NEW: Cardinal Müller also defends Mary as Co-Redemptrix Mary’s role as Co-Redemptrix is ‘a truth objectively contained in revelation’ He joins Cdl Burke & nearly the entire Mariology conference (held next to the Vatican) in directly affirming traditional teaching on co-redemption Müller (former CDF prefect) also rejects arguments made last year by Cardinal Fernández against the title: “Anyone familiar with the principles of Catholic theology, therefore, can find no cause for scandal” with such terms, he said. On the first day of the ‘De Maria numquam satis’ (“Of Mary, one can never say enough”) conference at the Patristic Institute Augustinianum in Rome, the major dogmatic issues underpinning the veneration of the Mother of God were discussed, with particular emphasis on her cooperation in salvation. Cardinal Raymond Burke opened the conference with a talk on ‘Our Lady of Guadalupe and the Reign of Christ the King: The Mission of the Co-Redemptrix and the Co-Redeemers’. The cardinal emphasised that the event at Guadalupe in 1531 is not merely a local devotion, but a manifestation of Christ’s kingship which restores the proper created order. He then explored in depth the central theme of human cooperation in the Redemption. The absolute beginning and perfect model of this cooperation is the Virgin Mother, who, having participated in a wholly unique way in the mystery of the Incarnation and the Passion, is rightly called the Co-Redemptrix. Consequently, by uniting their own daily crosses with that of the Saviour, all the baptised are called to become co-redeemers. Prof. Rev. Manfred Hauke spoke on ‘The Divine Motherhood of Mary: The Dogma of Ephesus and Its Significance’, refuting nineteenth-century historical theories that reduced the dogma to a syncretism with the pagan cults of Artemis or Isis. Hauke demonstrated the solid biblical and patristic foundation of the Theotokos, recalling that the Incarnation requires the active cooperation of the creature and that Mary expressed her consent at the Annunciation on behalf of the whole of human nature. The morning session was brought to a close by Father Wojciech Giertych, OP, with a paper on ‘The Primacy of Virginal Love within Mary’s Maternal Love’. The Theologian of the Papal Household outlined a profound emotional and spiritual distinction between virginal love — characterized by awe, veneration and a total absence of possessiveness — and maternal love. The latter, if left unpurified, risks degenerating into selfish attachment, whereas in Mary the two dimensions merge perfectly, offering the Church the perfect model of spiritual fruitfulness that springs from grace and charity. In the afternoon, following the recitation of the Holy Rosary and Eucharistic Adoration at the nearby Basilica of San Giovanni dei Fiorentini, the proceedings of the second session resumed in the auditorium of the Augustinianum. Slovakian theologian Fr Ľubomír Urbančok presented ‘The Contribution of the Roman Theological School to the Definition of the Immaculate Conception’, demonstrating how the theologians Giovanni Perrone and Carlo Passaglia provided Pius IX with the framework for dogmatic development, starting from the factum Ecclesiae — that is, from the living faith of the Church. Subsequently, Fr Joseph Hamilton addressed the topic ‘From the Dormition to the Assumption: Mary’s Eschatological Fulfilment in Eastern Apocryphal and Patristic Sources’, analysing Eastern texts on the Dormition and highlighting how the bodily Assumption of the Virgin represents the anthropological antidote par excellence against the disembodied excesses of transhumanism and artificial intelligence. Finally, Mgr Rudolf Michael Schmitz presented a paper entitled ‘The Virgin Mary in the Sphere of the Incarnation’. Through a rigorous systematic exposition in ten theses, Mgr Schmitz clarified that Mary belongs to the hypostatic order “terminatively” and not formally: whilst remaining a creature and without multiplying the personal union in Christ, she constitutes the created point at which the Incarnation touches humanity, thereby indissolubly linking Mariology to Christology and ecclesiology. The proceedings will resume tomorrow morningwith a session dedicated to ‘Mary in Worship, Devotion and History’. The organisers say over 400 scholars, religious and laypeople from all over the world are attending the conference.

Short summaries of the talks from the first day of the international Mariological conference on @PerMariam Tomorrow's talks include Cardinal Müller on Mary's role in the redemption – a theme which has already emerged numerous times in many talks today.
Cardinal Burke launches the De Maria numquam satis Mariology conference in Rome this morning, on the feast of Our Lady of the Rosary. He defends the title of Mary as Co-Redemptrix during his keynote speech. Cdl. Burke notes that if Mary can't be called Co-Redmptrix then Christians can't be called God's coadjutors, as St Paul teaches we are (1 Cor 3:9 & Colossians 1:24) Numerous cardinals have sent messages of support or greeting to conference, including Cardinal Fernández – the author of Mater Populi Fidelis Live updates on @PerMariam Full day’s summary coming later @CatholicHerald

Leo XIV led the nightly Rosary procession at the Shrine of Lourdes today. In a homily afterwards, he said Mary's “support & intercession are vital for Christians who wish to receive the grace of redemption won for us through Jesus’ blood and to resist evil” Despite the existence of Mater Populi Fidelis, Leo's discourses in Lourdes this wknd have been replete with the themes of Co-Redemptrix theology

Pope Leo to French bishops today: “There is no better way to come to Jesus than through Mary. Everything about her leads us to her Son. … “To renew hope & give fresh impetus to the Church’s mission in France, which I earnestly desire, there is only one 'roadmap,' which is always the same: to make Jesus Christ known and loved, authentically, passionately, again and again.”
