One surface level observation that I keep coming back to with Jason Kanzler that maybe? helps him out: he’s Andy McKay without being Andy McKay. And that’s no disrespect to Andy McKay! But if Jerry was honest about needing new voices they couldn’t really circle back to him!

Espada and Kanzler were both on same coaching staff. It just feels very clear to me what they’re doing. (And I don’t think you can sell fans/ team on hiring guy whose team finished with losing record as The Guy)
At this point I feel confident in two things: 1. Both get hired 2. Brandon Hyde is a coach My guess: Kanzler gets hired as first time manager. Espada and Hyde are BC/ 1B and provide familiarity and experience

Mariners are down to two finalists in their manager search — and Joe Espada and Jason Kanzler are scheduled for in-person interviews today and tomorrow. Decision expected by the end of the week. Details with @RyanDivish: seattletimes.com/sports/mari…

Whoever doesn’t get James Bond should still interview for M’s manager IMO
Sources: The Mariners are bringing in Joe Espada and Jason Kanzler to Seattle this week for in-person interviews for their managerial vacancy. Plus, another name they interviewed that is no longer in the running, and a follow-up on Stephen Vogt... mlb.com/news/mariners-interv…

Mariners have been tight-lipped throughout their search, which is why just three names have been linked to the opening so far. But there are 'mystery' candidates being seriously considered. Expecting quite a bit of movement in the next handful of days.
Baldelli was thought to be a front-runner, if not the front-runner. But with three young kids and roots in Florida, Seattle appeared to be a stretch. Not sure where exactly this leaves the Mariners, but they’ve been hoping to have a manager in place in next 7-10 days.

“He picked his head up looking for that runner coming home” is what Smoltz says… in reality, his eyes are on the ball the entire time and just makes an error Love how confidently Smoltz is just wrong all the time

If I were commissioner the last time the World Series was cancelled over a labor dispute I’d keep my mouth shut, but that’s just me
Bud Selig is making the case for an MLB salary cap as the Brewers prepare for their first World Series title. The former commissioner, who unsuccessfully pushed for a cap as both Brewers owner and commissioner, says MLB “has to make adjustments.”

Plenty of opportunities for either with the Mariners right now.
Mitch Garver confirms to MLB•com via text that he is indeed retiring after 10 seasons. He's hinted interest in both coaching and media opportunities once his playing days were over -- each of which he'd probably excel in. It's likely that he won't wander too far from the game.

The two righty bats the Mariners brought in for 2026 both retired before the official end of the season.

If there's a mole between Shohei's knee and biceps then they should probably surgically remove the animal tbh
Andrew Friedman said surgery is "not on the table" for Shohei Ohtani. Said it was "whack a mole" between the knee, then the biceps throughout the year. Friedman: "I fully expect him to pitch next year."

Certainly not drawing outright comparisons to them, but given their backgrounds if the Mariners were going to make Andy McKay bench coach before he left, I wonder if they'd offer that role to Kanzler if he doesn't get the manager job

It's cool to hear a few names and that the search is advanced but, also and again-- this is when an actual Mariners beat writer would help out @TheAthleticMLB !
