The #PeterboroughDomesticAbuseNetwork (#PDAN) is hosting a virtual workshop on April 24, 2025, at 10:00 a.m. about legal options available to obtain conditions to protect people who are experiencing #sexual (#SV) and #intimatepartnerviolence (#IPV) other than #police intervention. These include obtaining a #PeaceBond, #PrivateProsecution and/or applying to the #FamilyCourt for a #Restrainingorder. A discussion will also be had about how to support survivors charged after having reported SA or IPV to the police and how survivors of IPV and SA can pursue civil claims for damages against the perpetrators as an alternative to the criminal justice system. This is free and open to anyone to attend. The registration form can be found here: forms.gle/Ms2nH9EugbcD4H5f6 Hope to see many of you there! #YourWayForward #PCLC #SHAPE #NCLC

"Homeless people risk freezing to death and most of us don't know how to help. We can't force the homeless to go indoors." It's not the law that keeps police from taking them to safety. It's a lack of mental health beds. buff.ly/4b2ce4r

I am deeply grateful for the essential work of @UNSRVAW Reem Alsalem, defending human & civil rights of women & children around the world, including in #familycourt #domesticabuse. I have signed the letter of support of her work & urge you to do the same docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1F…
Many well-meaning people would be shocked to learn that cases such as these are not isolated incidents, but quite common around the world. I remember how shocked I was as I started to wrap my head around the sheer level of injustice and danger that many mothers and their children were forced into. It was a situation too alarming to keep to myself - which led to this report i presented to #HRC53: ohchr.org/en/documents/thema… I am dismayed that the situation continues unabated in many places.

Unless you work in the healthcare field, you may not be aware of the amount of #sexualharassment, #discrimination and #violence our healthcare workers face, at times daily. In our latest blog, SHAPE explores this issue and guides how we could prevent and address this problem: pclcsvprojects.com/post/how-… #ShapeYourWorkplace #NCLC #LegalAidOntario

According to front-line organizations, housing remains the biggest issue for women fleeing intimate partner violence. With many shelters and supportive housing at capacity, some women are facing homelessness or going back to their abusers. ow.ly/EkPF50UVhH7 #torontonews

Thank you, #AngelicoDino of #LawTimes, for bringing this #DivisionalCourt appeal of a decision made by the #HumanRightsTribunalofOntario (#HRTO) to our attention. This decision provides an excellent example of how HRTO has dismissed applications on procedural grounds without proper consideration. As noted by #TribunalWatchOntario lnkd.in/gmgbPKZT, 93% of HRTO's decisions that they reviewed "were dismissals of claims without a hearing," which is contrary to HRTOs original purpose, which was to be accessible for unrepresented people. In this case, the claim was dismissed by HRTO because they found that most of his allegations of discrimination had occurred more than one year before his application. The Divisional Court ruled that although HRTO had cited the correct legal test for determining whether there was a "series of events," they had failed to apply these factors properly and had refused to accept additional evidence offered by the complainant despite having asked for it in the notice they sent out to him for this summary hearing, thereby denying him procedural fairness. Here is a link to the decision for those of you interested: Erazo v. Ontario (Ministry of Community and Social Services), 2024 ONSC 7181 (CanLII), <canlii.ca/t/k8h89>, retrieved on 2025-01-27 lawtimesnews.com/practice-ar…
