My first PhD chapter took 3 weeks to write.
It took 17 rules to fix. Now there are 20.
I'd read everything and cited everyone. Then John, my supervisor, read it: "Emmanuel, I can't follow your argument."

I'd read everything and cited everyone. Then John, my supervisor, read it: "Emmanuel, I can't follow your argument."
Then the test itself.
Read only the first sentence of every paragraph, top to bottom. If the argument still makes sense, the chapter passes. If it doesn't, you've found where your reader gets lost.
The second time John read that chapter, he said: "Now I can follow your thinking."
How long did your first chapter take? 1 week, 1 month, or please don't ask?

Yes, you can use AI for your paper's figures.
Elsevier now says so. Here's how to do it right.
Here's my rule: words before pictures.
1. Describe your figure in full before you open any tool. If you can't, it isn't ready.
2. Check what comes back against your own words, line by line.
Reviewers read your figure against your text. A clear brief gets you a figure that matches it.
How many words would it take you to describe your main figure? Guess a number.

After 20 years in academia, my honest advice: don't.
Not everyone should start a PhD.
I nearly quit mine in year 2. No one had told me what it would be like.

4. You'll doubt yourself more than your data. Nearly everyone faces this at some point.
5. Year 2 is the hardest. The excitement's gone and the end isn't in sight yet. That's where I nearly stopped.
Better to know this before day 1 than in year 3.
