Tangier, Morocco 🇲🇦 | During last week’s United Cities and Local Governments (@UCLG_org) Congress and World Summit of Local and Regional Leaders, an #NYUCIC delegation joined global leaders, policymakers, and practitioners for a gathering to strategize, ideate, and learn about how to build the next generation of universal local public services and harness the crucial role of cities in building peaceful societies.
URBAN VIOLENCE PREVENTION ➕
CIC joined colleagues from the @PiOC_Network network to highlight innovative strategies for violence prevention through cities:
🛣️ Luisa Portugal, Program Officer, highlighted the ways the network accompanies cities in their efforts to reduce violence, including through member-driven research and direct support to members.
📺 Daniel Friedman, Program Director of our Halving Global Violence program, gave remarks at the UCLG General Assembly that contributed to discussions on the post-2030 agenda, the role of cities in global governance, the importance of partnerships in spurring local innovation, and the critical role of local government and civil society in achieving dramatic reductions in violence.
Watch his full remarks on YouTube: youtu.be/AQnnuiFP6I0?si=EPgv….
🎙️ Paul Smoke, CIC Executive Director, presented opening remarks for a fireside chat with two city mayors co-organized with @OpenSociety and @mercociudades. He highlighted how Peace in Our Cities helps share knowledge among local groups across different countries and cities and supports their efforts to achieve significant reductions in violence, sometimes by more than 60 percent.

FINANCING OUR FUTURE 💹
Paul and David Hugh Jackson, Non-Resident Fellow, also participated in a special panel discussion, “From Advocacy to Transformation & Delivery: Financing the Next Generation of Territorial Public Services, Designing the Financing Architecture We Need.” They underscored how far we have come in the global financing debate for local and regional governments—and what needs to be rethought for the next decade.
CLIMATE FINANCING 🌏
Congratulations to David on his nomination to the Strategic Steering Committee of the Mediterranean Climate House Foundation—where he will support cities and local governments in climate financing initiatives focused on the Mediterranean region, which has already exceeded the Paris targets of 1.5 degrees.

🔙 Last week in Brooklyn, students, technologists, and community leaders gathered for the 2026 NYU Tech for Change Hackathon, a three-day sprint to build solutions for safer, more just communities.
Organized by the Public Interest Technology University Network (PIT-UN), participants developed civic tech ideas to tackle real-world challenges, from public safety to community resilience. 💡
#NYUCIC and @SDG16Plus were proud to take part, with Luisa Portugal from our Halving Global Violence initiative bringing two @PiOC_Network cities as clients: Edmonton 🇨🇦 and Niterói 🇧🇷, which invited teams to design tech solutions supporting their public safety strategies. 🤝
Participants explored questions such as:
🔺 How can we redefine public safety?
🔺 How can data advance justice?
🔺 How can tech support human flourishing?
👏 Thanks to the organizers, mentors, and students who made it a success.
