The only wrong answer is to do nothing, that’s been my main message to the @shopify design team as AI shifts how we work. I enjoyed diving into this with @designerfund, especially as we invest in apprenticeships in a time when designers are becoming more capable and creative than ever.
“The only wrong answer is to do nothing” Enjoy our latest AI in Design case study from the @Shopify design team! This one is crammed with many incredible examples of how they work (the last example made me yell “oh no way” when I first saw it). Lots of teams talk about “a culture that supports experimentation”, but few teams do it at this level. 00:00 Designing in a new era 01:35 From mockups to working prototypes 04:16 Designing your dev workflow 07:00 Beyond code: Product, data, research 09:31 A home for fragmented design tools 10:24 AI is just another tool Let us know what you think! Today Paper has something special to share Tabs are live in @paper ✨ This is a big deal because you and your agent can now work on multiple files at the same time. Unblock parallel prompting: explore faster, stay in flow, stay creative (sound on for the video! 🔊)

Did you see Paper at config? It's quite the story. We designed it all in-house, lived through the ups and downs of handing out 3,000 coffees, and had a crazy fun time at Detach. Check out Dom's blog: all the fun, what went wrong, what we learned from connecting with community.

We rolled out the Paper Claw Machine last night (two of them, actually) at Detach. It was filled with Paper hats, shirts, airpod pros, and teenage engineering pocket operators. Time for a Paper merch shop?

The future belongs to designers who build…and who have the spit in them to push past engineering dogma. Agents are making technology choices most legible to them, time for us to update our priors.

The most important product you have is the one customers already use. Yet most roadmaps sprint away from it, toward new surfaces, new bets, more complexity. Maintenance explodes & speed disappears. Go deeper before you go wider!

Hello, here's a brain dump of everything I know about animation performance. By replacing a single global CSS variable with JS animations, I took style recalculations on a popular portfolio website down from a whopping 8ms to nanoseconds. That and much more in this post.
Animating layout isn't always bad. Global CSS variables are a performance killer. Hardware accelerated blurs can crash sites. Surprised? We go into all this and more, in the first Web Animation Performance Tier List: motion.dev/blog/web-animatio…

🎥 On the new episode of @shape_fm we're talking about things to expect when hiring people and how to land a role. @PixelJanitor and I have taken very different career paths, so it turned into a long, honest chat about our experiences and lessons along the way.

it's unbelievably hard to find them. to attract them you must demonstrate you've cared about design from day one and they will impact your trajectory as much as a great engineer if you find the right ones
People are finally starting to realise how few truly great designers there are, and how disproportionately valuable they are.
