Two newly discovered fungal species, Paleoophiocordyceps gerontoformicae and Paleoophiocordyceps ironomyiae, have been identified in 99-million-year-old Burmese amber. These ancient entomopathogenic fungi, closely related to the modern genus Ophiocordyceps, were found infecting an ant pupa and a fly. The research suggests that during the Cretaceous period, these fungi underwent a host jump from beetles to moths, ants, and other insects, likely adapting in response to the growing diversity of insect life at the time. Findings like these remind us that fungi are not just decomposers. They are evolutionary pioneers and regulators of life on Earth. Their role in shaping ecosystems is as ancient as it is ongoing! royalsocietypublishing.org/d…

Really appreciate conversations like this that explore the deeper cultural and scientific aspects of plants like kratom. There's so much we can learn when we look beyond headlines and listen to thoughtful experts.

🌱 Protect the Amazon with our indigenous partners! 💚 Since this morning, our Giving Tuesday campaign has raised almost $6,000. We need YOUR help to meet our $25,000 goal this Giving Tuesday, to support our work to preserve ecosystems and biodiversity essential for mitigating the effects of climate change alongside our indigenous partners. 🌎 Indigenous peoples are on the frontlines of climate change, contribute least to the climate crisis, and are suffering its effects disproportionately. When you support ACT, you empower indigenous-led efforts that have achieved extraordinary milestones: -2.7 million acres of indigenous territory established 🌳 -3,000+ acres purchased and returned to indigenous ownership🌿 -9.9 million acres managed sustainably 🌴 ⏩ Will you join us and our indigenous partners by donating $50 today? Interest in psychedelic therapy is growing, but most studies focus on synthetic compounds. In fact, of the 198 studies posted on clinicaltrials.gov, of which 49 have been completed with the molecule yet only 1 with psilocybin mushrooms. Insights from our Roots To Thrive program show that participants experienced similar benefits from whole Psilocybe mushrooms compared to synthetic psilocybin, often preferring the natural forms. This highlights the importance of exploring whole mushrooms and plant materials, which have been used for centuries in traditional practices. By advocating for research into these natural options, we could significantly enhance our understanding of effective mental health treatments. More research is needed on comparing psilocybin in its pure or complex forms. Which is better: the molecule or the mushroom? doi.org/10.1556/2054.2024.00…

Every breath we take is linked to those who protect the essence of our planet. 🌱💧 Imagine if their only source of life became polluted. For them, river pollution and forest loss threaten not only their home, but also the vital thread of their existence. #ProtectTheEssentials #Identity #Diversity #COP16 #PeaceWithNature

"The Amazon is ablaze again. What it means for us." by @DocMarkPlotkin "In 2019, the world watched in horror as images of the Amazon rainforest ablaze flooded the news. Over 70,000 wildfires raged uncontrollably, killing wildlife, filling hospitals with patients struggling to breathe, polluting rivers, halting air traffic, and casting a dark pall over Brazil’s largest cities. And now, it’s happening again." news.mongabay.com/2024/09/th…

💚 Our support to AIDESEP (the Interethnic Association for the Development of the Peruvian Amazon) has enabled significant gains in the creation of protected areas for isolated peoples in Peru. AIDESEP helped to formally propose the creation of the Atacuari, Pupuña and Tamaya Abujao indigenous reserves, which are currently in the process of being created and together span over 600,000 hectares. 🌿 📸: @aidesep_org #nocontact #peru #amazonia #peoplesinvoluntaryisolation #PIACI #protectionstrategies #biodiversity #climate #noillegalmining #illegallogging #peruvianamazon #amazoniaperuana

🪵 The Mashco Piro people, an indigenous group of the Peruvian Amazon that chooses to live in isolation to defend their right to self-determination, have recently been seen by local communities and #humanrights campaigners close to an area where several logging companies have been granted concessions. 🌴 🚧 More recently, the Forest Stewardship Council suspended the certification of the logging company accused of encroaching on the traditional territory of the Mashco Piro in the Madre de Dios Territorial Reserve in the Peruvian Amazon. 🚧 This resulted only after at least one logger was reported injured in a confrontation with the Mashco Piro, further demonstrating a need for these forests to be protected from incursions. 🚨 Indigenous peoples in isolation in the Peruvian Amazon face threats from extractive activities encroaching on their territories. High rates of forest degradation threaten their survival and increase the risk of contact. 🍃 More than 25 different isolated indigenous groups inhabit the Peruvian Amazon. The creation of indigenous reserves and territorial reserves defends their rights to live in their traditional territories without contact. 💚 We stand behind efforts to protect the lifeways of isolated indigenous people in the #PeruvianAmazon. ⚖  📸 : Cedia, 2019 ❌ Read more through an article by @Mongabay. news.mongabay.com/2024/09/pe… #indigenousrights #humanrights #amazonrainforest #isolatedpeoples #pueblosaislados #PIACI #AISLADOS #amazonía #granchaco
