Hopefully these lengthy sentences will act as a deterrent to other poachers.

"Though the rangers’ work is difficult and dangerous, it’s poorly paid. They work for the equivalent of $50 a month, and sometimes go three or even six months without pay, when tourist numbers are low"

A sobering fact this #WorldAnimalDay: more than 38 500 species are threatened with extinction. The race to save species is more urgent than ever. Habitat loss and the illegal wildlife trade are amongst the main reasons for the rapid decline of most species. 🐾‼️

Love this! Telangana government is setting up a 'Secret Service Fund' with a starting amount of Rs 4.06 crore (around £453,000 / $617,000) to stop poaching. The fund will largely be used to pay informers for tip-offs

SEIZED --THREE TONS OF LION BONES THE EQUIVALENT OF NEARLY 300 LIONS! #TCM (Traditional Chinese Medicine) is decimating the #WildWorld.
💥 PLEASE SIGN THE AWF petition here: bit.ly/3slDgx2 💥
#TCM must end the use of animal body parts in unscientific "medicine".
6-month curfew & 2-year suspended sentence for illegally trading in the body parts of endangered species. Might as well just slap Law on the wrist & tell him he's a very naughty boy. Pitiful! His crime promotes possession of ivory & therefore poaching 😡

After an ENV volunteer alerted us to a restaurant in #Hanoi #Vietnam selling #pangolin, police seized 3 live and 14 frozen #pangolins. Then we worked with the court to secure prison time: 11 yrs for the restaurants owner, 5.5 yrs for the chef, and the 3 yrs for the supplier

Okapi skin seized and one trafficker arrested near Kindu. This is probably from the Lomami national park. Let's remind you that Okapi is endemic to the DRC but now it's being killed for its meat, hide and fat. @okapiproject @Evebazaiba @IFAW @FaunaFloraInt @PoachingPrevent

Landela’s arrest highlights degree to which poaching syndicates hv infiltrated the ranks of prk officials & illustrates the trend in corrupting rangers through enticement or coercion. Since 2009 42 staff hv been dismissed due to alleged links to 🦏poaching

An insightful critique questioning the efficacy of prior conventions/resolutions tackling transnational wildlife crime and the validity of the fourth UNTOC Protocol on wildlife crime.
See my article below on the current push by western parties to add a 4th protocol to the UNTOC, as an effort to criminalise wildlife crime especially in African countries. @aworipat @eawildlife @wildlifelawyer @DrOdote
