When Jio was getting ready to launch in 2015, I remember being petrified to find myself on this Economic Times list of 10 businessmen to watch in 2016. Mukesh Ambani was #1, and I was #6, mainly because we had just made delivery brokerage free. We were, and still are, ants compared to Reliance/Jio. ๐Ÿ˜… Looking back, what's phenomenal isn't just how big it has become. It's how much it has changed India and helped so many businesses start and grow. We've been beneficiaries too. @Zerodha wouldn't be what it is today without Aadhaar and UPI. But just as important was Jio, along with Airtel, bringing millions of Indians online with affordable data. Together, all of this made the huge expansion of Indian capital markets after COVID possible. Without this digital infrastructure, many online-first businesses would be much smaller, and a lot of today's consumer business models might not exist at all. In 2016, India had roughly 2 crore unique investors. Today, over 13 crore Indians invest in the markets, and Jio played a big part in that. I can't tell you whether to apply for the upcoming IPO. But both telcos have played a huge role in enabling an entire generation of Indian businesses like ours. And it's nice that the capital markets they helped grow can now help Jio raise money. From the outside, it's easy to miss how much of our success depends on infrastructure built by others.

Isha Ambani shares the Jio story 'It was about 2009-2010, Akash and I were in college in the States, and we were back home in Bombay for a break, and I had an assignment to submit online. I tired to submit the assignment, but unfortunately the internet did not work and I couldn't submit it. What followed was a conversation about why should India be left behind? Akash firmly believed that the answer and solution to this was creating a digital technology platform company. I 2016, Jio launched and here we are today in 2026.' Nana Saheb. What a man. What a loss. I shared a wonderfully warm relationship with Nana Patekar. We didnโ€™t meet nearly as often as I would have liked, but whenever we did, it felt like weโ€™d last met yesterday. He took particular pride in the fact that a fellow Maharashtrian had made a name for himself in photography. There was invariably a warm word of encouragement, inevitably accompanied by a generous helping of his trademark acidic wit. Unpredictable. Intense. Fiercely individualistic. Nana Sahib didnโ€™t merely enter a room. He took possession of it. His presence and aura were quite extraordinary. One of my most cherished memories of him is from what may well have been among his last formal portrait sessions, when I photographed him for my exhibition, HONEST: Portraits of Character. He insisted I come to his farm near Pune to make the pictures. Before the shoot, he wanted to know exactly how many people were coming. Not because he was concerned about the size of the crew, but because lunch would be served. And what a lunch it was. An extensive, delicious, home-cooked Maharashtrian feast. Every single person, from my assistants and spot boys to the drivers, was seated and fed in his main dining area. And there was Nana Saheb himself, walking around the tables, personally serving everyone an extra puri and another helping of his famous mutton. No hierarchy. No fuss. Just extraordinary hospitality from a man who could intimidate an entire film set with one raised eyebrow. After lunch, he proudly took me around his sprawling property, including his gymnasium, where he casually knocked off a dozen tricep dips. Stone cold. No warm-up. At an age when most people consider getting off the sofa a fairly respectable workout. And then came a moment of such spectacularly morbid humour that it could only have been Nana. He showed me a neatly stacked pile of firewood that heโ€™d kept ready for his own funeral. I thought he was joking. He wasnโ€™t. He explained, with complete seriousness, that the wood had been carefully kept dry because wet wood produces too much smoke. And he didnโ€™t want people at his funeral crying because the smoke was getting into their eyes! I laughed till my sides hurt. Only Nana Sahib could plan his own cremation and somehow make it a comedy routine. A phenomenal actor. A voice that defined a generation. An utterly original personality. And beneath that famously formidable exterior, a deeply generous and solid human being. His passing feels terribly personal. Like a punch in the guts. Iโ€™m profoundly grateful that I got to make those portraits of him. But even more grateful for the hours we spent together, the conversations, the laughter and the privilege of seeing the man beyond the legend. My heartfelt condolences to Malhar, Neelu ji and everyone who loved him. Rest easy, Nana Saheb. There will never be another quite like you.

Tata Trusts issues statement, "The Articles of Association (AoA) of Tata Sons do not leave any decision of the Board to a mere head count of Directors. They provide that no decision can be taken unless it has the affirmative support of at least a majority of the Directors nominated by the Tata Trusts, who hold approximately 66% of the Company. This is a separate condition under the AoA. There are two Tata Trusts nominees on the Board of Tata Sons. Majority amongst two is two and not one. On September 17, 2026, one such Director voted against the resolution. Thus, the affirmative support of Tata Trusts Nominee Directors as mandated by the AoA was not given. The condition failed, and so did the resolution. The Chairmanโ€™s casting vote is available only where there is equality of votes at the overall board level. It does not apply amongst Tata Trustsโ€™ Nominee Directors. Whether the result of the vote was 4:1, or any other figure, is irrelevant. A condition is either met, or it is not. In this case the condition was not met. It is now being suggested that a refusal of support amounts to a deadlock which would paralyse the Company and that the Chairman of the meeting was therefore entitled to resolve the position by a casting vote. There was no paralysis and there was no deadlock. The Board put a question, and the AoA answered it in the negative. The exercise of a protective right conferred by a company's own constitution is not a deadlock; it is that constitution working as it was written to work. The resolution to reappoint Mr N. Chandrasekaran as the Chairman of Tata Sons, considered at the Board meeting on September 17, 2026, was not validly passed and has no legal effect. In the eyes of the law, it is void ab initio."
