I've only just discovered the story of Jack Barth, the original creator of Yesterday, and Christ alive, it's one of the most grotesquely ironic stories I've ever encountered in the film industry.
For those unfamiliar with it, Barth was a struggling screenwriter who conceived an ingenious premise: a musician wakes up in a world where The Beatles never existed, realises he's the only person who remembers their songs, and starts passing them off as his own.
Barth wrote the screenplay, originally titled Cover Version. After decades of trying to break into the film industry, he finally sold it.
Enter Richard Curtis.
Curtis rewrote the screenplay, transforming Barth's rather melancholy examination of artistic failure into a crowd-pleasing romantic comedy. Curtis received sole screenplay credit, while Barth was left sharing a story by credit with the considerably more famous writer.
Now, Barth agreed to this arrangement. That's important. But what happened afterwards is what makes the whole business so bloody unpleasant.
Curtis subsequently described receiving little more than a one-sentence premise, despite Barth's original screenplay containing several remarkably specific elements that survived into the finished film, including the elderly John Lennon and the Harry Potter gag.
Barth has argued that his contribution was systematically minimised, leaving him struggling to convince people that he created the story in the first place.
And here's where the irony becomes so vicious that Kafka himself would probably have rejected it for being too fucking obvious.
In Barth's original version, the protagonist DOESN'T become enormously successful. He possesses the greatest collection of songs in popular music history and STILL struggles to make it.
It's a story about the cruel indifference of artistic success. About how creative talent and commercial recognition are frequently separated by circumstances beyond an artist's control.
Then Barth watches his own creation become an international hit, with another writer receiving the lion's share of the acclaim.
And now, six years after Barth publicly complained about the whole miserable business, Yesterday is becoming a West End musical.
Judging by his reaction today, the news appears to have come as something of a surprise to him.
Fucking hell.
I appreciate that contracts exist. I appreciate that Curtis substantially rewrote the film. I even appreciate that Barth received payment and agreed to the credits.
But there's something profoundly depressing about an industry that can take a struggling writer's original screenplay, turn it into a multimillion-pound success, and leave that writer feeling practically invisible.
And now the machinery is apparently gearing up to do it all over again, this time with jazz hands.
As for Richard Curtis, a gigantic FUCK YOU.
I wonder if these arrogant pigs will ever notify me that the story I created is becoming a huge West End musical.

On Nov 12th, 19th 26th and Dec 6th I am doing four art workshops at Soho Poly in central London. The classes are subsidised by Westminster University and low priced at £8 each and a season ticket for £22. Each workshop has a different theme.

You gotta love Billy Costello when he goes into full 'Red Pepper Sam', Ukelele-Ike-style scat mode :
Ya gotta love google searches these days.
Hey google - when's that Nathan Fielder doc 'You Can See Everything' that everyone's talkin' about coming out in the UK?
'Yesiree, that would be the 1st of January in the year 1 AD, sir. Hope you enjoy it, sir'.
Ooooooookay.
It's supposedly World Bollywood Day, so in honor of that please enjoy not just one of my favourite Bollywood moments of all time, but one of my favourite musical numbers of all times, period.

I guess it'll kinda break the flow of Fantasia next time it's watched on there, when that broom-holding bloke in the pink tracksuit pops up and sings 'DIIIIIARRHEEEEEA' in the middle of the Nutcracker Suite.
Uncle Walt is likely spinning in his freezer cabinet.
Disney+ has altered its user agreement to clarify that ads will be allowed on all subscription tiers. bit.ly/4hhOjBo
Loving that @CoyoteACMEMovie (that I loved & which my 10 year old has now seen TWICE in a cinema) has surpassed $100 Million worldwide & is officially in profit.
But can I please humbly request that when it comes out on blu-ray in Nov it doesn't use this AWFUL cover art? :
I mean, come on - these are all perfectly fine, but the UK poster art?
No thank you very much. #coyotevsacme
This has reminded me of a day that will forever live in infamy :
When I found a copy of the Beyond the Valley of the Dolls soundtrack in a 50p each box of CDs but Destiny's Child's 'Survivor' was inside the case.
Still breaks my heart a tiny bit even now.
(The pain of that terrible memory tho is almost completely countered by sharing the movie with @nancy_dewe on the @sohoradio show & her absolutely [and 100% correctly] loving it) :
mixcloud.com/sohoradio/popti… )
I 100% agree this is a mega-moment in a mind blowing film, but I'm not so sure this was such a pain in the ass to shoot.
Well rehearsed choreography (via the amazing Toni Basil), a tape measure & a good deal of foresight would have made this time consuming but very achievable.
This ad for ciggies was shot by Peter Medak during one of the many breaks in filming for the Ghost of the Noonday Sun, with Seller's & Milligan flatly refusing to even touch the cigarette pack as they were (supposedly) the Chairman (& Deputy Chair) of the anti-smoking league...
Loved this Two Ronnies sketch when I first saw it as a teeny kid & still love it now.
A fantastic use of their opposing yang & yang performance styles - Barker underplaying beautifully & Corbett overplaying to a tee :
