ALT Questions to ask your child What things are you looking forward to? Is there anything you want to talk about? When was the last time you were very happy? What makes you feel calm? What difficulties are you facing now? What can I do to help? Where is a place you feel safe? How are you finding things at school at the moment? What things would you like to do in the future? Would it be helpful if we planned each day together? Do you have any worries about the coronavirus? Where in our home do you feel like you can have your own space? What are you worried about when you lie in bed and can't sleep? Can you show me what you like about gaming? How do you feel about things changing? What do you think could help you feel better? What have you enjoyed about today?

ALT No matter what results you got today, be proud of yourself. If you didn't get what you expected, it will be okay. Give yourself time to process, and know that you have achieved (and will continue to achieve) so much!

ALT Listen to your child. Talking about self harm can be overwhelming for young people. It's important that you give your child space to talk about how they're feeling freely, without passing judgements, and avoid asking too many questions.

ALT Avoid telling your child to stop. Asking a young person to stop self-harming can be unhelpful. Instead, you can explore if there is anything else that could help them to manage their difficult thoughts and feelings, and encourage them to reach out to their support networks.

ALT Reassure your child that help is available. By reassuring them that services can be accessed via an app or online, they may feel more comfortable opening up and reaching out for help. Encourage them to visit: youngminds.org.uk/self-harm

ALT Seek professional help if you need to. It can be difficult to know what to say to y our child, or know how you can help them. It is important to respect your own limitations and seek support through the GP or your childs school if you need it.
