Ercel Francis Ellis, Jr. was a thoroughbred racing savant with a storied journalism career as both a racehorse owner and trainer. Most importantly a dear friend during our years on the air together. Over the last 4 1/2 months we continued to share some great moments. We continued to call each other 'my friend' up until his last day. The friendship I developed with Ercel Ellis dates back before we ever met. My great-great uncles worked for Ercel's father at Dixiana. Ercel and I were kindred spirits before we ever made it to the starting gate. He would send me off to Keeneland or Churchill Downs and say "Well, go throw a little money on the floor for me." Much to share over the next week about the extraordinary life and career of a true Kentucky gentlemen. Thank you Ercel (and to his wife Jackie) for allowing me the honor to work with you on Horse Tales on Saturday mornings. Thank you Ercel for your friendship, support and guidance throughout the years. Thank you for the Horse Tales. That big racetrack in sky claimed a Kentucky original. My prayers are with Ercel's wife, Jackie, and his family. I'm going to miss Ercel Ellis. Happy Trails to you, Ercel. Until we meet again. Rest in peace, my friend.
