Kirby Smart says the transfer portal has made too many coaches forget what the word “coach” means “That’s what the word ‘coach’ is. It derived from 'stagecoach'… Where you took somebody from one place to the other.” “Where are you taking your players… Instead of shipping them off or importing them from elsewhere?” “Now it’s you coaching against me… And me coaching against you. Who makes their players better?” “In the second portal window, there was very little effective movement. I call it ‘swap and spit.’ You just took somebody else’s two or three… And they took your two or three… You traded… And all you got was a new person.” “Over 80% of the people had no impact. All they were doing was moving to move. They were just moving to move.” “Let’s make our players better. Let’s say the ones we lifted and practiced with all last winter… They’re ours now.’” “And they’re better now because they stayed here.”
