Forest Landscape Restoration isn't about isolated sites. It's landscape-level work balancing ecology, community wellbeing and livelihoods — restoring ecosystem function, water and soil systems together.
IUCN's 7 FLR principles turn this into practical guidance.

Creating a figure as a bioinformatician: 10% making the plot, 90% fonts, colors and labels.
Bigger font. Blue, not orange. Add sample names. Flip the heatmap.
Keep it in code: ggsave(), patchwork for panels, no hand edits in Illustrator. Then each round of feedback is a re-run.

Blue is the colour! Aristea capitata (Iridaceae); Elaeocarpus angustifolius (Elaeocarpaceae); Memcylon (Melastomataceae); Burmannia disticha (Burmanniaceae) #Midterms2026 #BlueWave2026

Habitat fragmentation may be causing birds to lose genetic diversity far faster than previously estimated.
A new Science study of 62 songbird species in China found that all had lost nearly half their genetic diversity over roughly 50 years, including species considered common and at low risk of extinction. scim.ag/4AtWz9F

Your ggplot2 bars come out A, B, C, not sorted by value. ggplot2 isn't ignoring you.
Bar order comes from the factor levels.
factor(x, levels = x[order(value)]) sets them by hand. forcats::fct_reorder(x, value) does it inside aes().
Learn the mechanic, not just the shortcut.

How many ER binding sites are there in MCF7? Some papers say 1,000. Others say 20,000. Neither is simply wrong.
ChIP-seq vs CUT&RUN. Antibody quality. Drifting cell lines. Estrogen or no estrogen.
Beginners ask "how many?" Practitioners ask "under what context?"

Most heatmaps go wrong before the clustering starts. The color map is wrong.
All-positive data like TPM: sequential, white to dark blue.
Positive and negative, like z-scores: diverging, blue-white-red, zero in the middle.
Lightness shows order. Hue is for labels and direction.

Never run plain sort on a VCF. It scrambles the header, and ##fileformat has to stay on line 1.
One awk line prints the header untouched, then sorts the variants by chromosome (chr1 < chr2 < chr10) and position. For big files: bcftools sort.
