I’m asked “why bother? You’ve left, move on with your life” I know that current prison policy is ruining tens of thousands of lives and creating a body count. Prison policy is going the wrong way at 100mph so I feel compelled to speak.

The world has three problems, Trump, Putin & Netanyahu. The list of weak, spineless, corrupt politicians we employ to ensure we don’t have three problems is huge.

Imagine you’re the senior officer on a prison wing and you have to make the following call; Prisoner angry at missed healthcare appointment throws punch at officer, misses but alarm pushed he gets walked to seg. Governors report he gets a month on basic, no TV, no association….

Emptying prisons sending prisoners to homelessness is just greasing the revolving door for their return. It’s getting cold out there and privateers @SodexoGroup profits will be the only healthy result. insidetime.org/newsround/825…

So @andyburnham promised to abolish appalling IPP sentences. Then he said before the end of this parliament (2yrs 8 months) and so far 3 prisoners have been released. There are 2,271 people languishing in prison far beyond tariff on IPP sentences.

Uncomfortable truths about prison, this is not uncomfortable. Wing assist duty meant standing with 5 cons at midday in the servery waiting for the radio call “kitchen ready” whereupon we’d trundle last nights industrial hostess trolly back to the kitchen and pick up ….

…..today’s gourmet offering. While waiting to move, conversation titles included “worst girlfriend” & “did you ever get a bang on the head as a kid” & “at that moment things got out of hand” during those stories the laughter became the common language…..

I’d still spin their cells or nick them if I had to, they’d still shift contraband around and use illicit mobiles and but that was the rules. Like the football match in the trenches during WW1, peace could briefly break out and remind us all we were just flesh and blood.

Our NHS has been hollowed out over the last few decades. Thank you, @premnsikka, for speaking out The UK has 2.4 NHS beds PER 1,000 people Japan: 12.6 Germany: 7.7 Austria: 6.6 France: 5.4 OECD average: 4.2 This is why we have the disgrace of corridor care. It's time to invest and rebuild our NHS

Part of prison officer recruitment is role play to weed out overly aggressive people. Privateers pay minimum wage and accept minimal professionalism. This #GEOAmey worker shouldn’t be near a prison. No excuses.

I can only apologise, it was eleven years ago, I’ve matured a lot since then, I’m not accusing him of anything and I wouldn’t let him store a laptop at my house.
We had #FailingGrayling but has #Gove got a twitter abusive hashtag yet? How about #CreepyWeirdoGove #I'llGetMyCoat

Private companies taking over public services all do the same, sell what they can, employ as few as they can, charge as much as feasible, do as little as possible, water, electric, gas, buses. Same in prison privatisation, with disastrous consequences.

It’s lovely to watch parliament create laws to keep us all safe but if we don’t have a legal profession able to confront government all we’re left with is a police service mainly looking after itself.

Private prisons in the UK are a legal mess, custody workers cannot carry a baton as they do not have the power of a constable while on duty but an HMP officer does. Privateers prefer CatB prisons as they attract higher profits but while Section 86 ….

… of the Criminal Justice Act 1991 allows custody workers to use reasonable force they cannot carry a weapon. Private jail operators give custody workers a baton. It would take just one law firm to blow this scandal apart, sadly, we don’t have one decent law firm.
