Am excited about this thesis. @opsstudiovc is looking to back folks building machines in import-dependent categories in India as the first-check in/ as part of pre-seed rounds 🙌🏾

If India wants to grow, Machine Making has to be made the most lucrative engineering branch in colleges. Indian industries need to come forward and invest in machine makers and robotics.

Back with another edition of bothering @Nithin0dha with questions.
While we speak about why we do what we do at @Rainmatterin and @RainmatterOrg internally very often, felt we should share our thoughts with everyone.
And if you have questions for Nithin, do send them. ♥️

A few years ago, we all sat in a conference room of our office, where @PritnRandom explained exactly how this will play out. And it has.
@NaxatraLabs is an investment not just for EV, but to localise design, manufacturing and skills.
Sure, Naxatra alone cannot change this. But I think the next decade of investments in innovation has to be about local innovation and alternatives for critical supply chains that we cannot bring online when we most need them.
We have to get started now.
Good story. China is squeezing India's electric vehicle demand for everything it has got. India is importing everything and just can't seem to get out of the squeeze. @MorningContext

I just spent two days in Andhra Pradesh. It reminded me of a few important things in early stage investing.

Yesterday I met a founder at an event, and he started talking about how many of his relationships had become harder to manage since starting the company. If you’re thinking of starting a company, you should probably tell everyone close to you that for a while you may become slightly unbearable. You’ll check your phone during breakfast and dinner. You’ll say “five minutes” and disappear for few hours. People will ask, “How’s the company going?” and in your head it may sound like, “Is it failing?” even when nobody meant it that way. Tell them not to stop asking. Tell your spouse that being distracted doesn’t mean you’ve stopped caring. Tell your parents that you may call less but the doesn’t mean ignorance. Tell your friends to keep inviting you even after you’ve said no six times in a row. Tell them that if you start becoming someone they don’t recognize, they’re allowed to say it.
Most founders slowly grow a thick skin because suddenly everyone has an opinion, judgment or advice on what they’re building. Some people will think you’re brave. Some will think you’re stupid. Some will secretly wait for you to fail and some will suddenly become very interested when it starts working. Try not to become cynical about all of them because the company will already consume enough of you. Don’t make it consume every relationship too. You will feel lonely, exhausted and misunderstood at times. And once in a while, when your closest friend asks you to come for dinner, just go.

From EVs to now Agri, Marine & Industrial, @NaxatraLabs from the @opsstudiovc family has shown the capability to deliver motors for the most cutting-edge use cases, and in record time.
All are indigenously designed & manufactured, with full-stack service & support, combined with a long-term partnership mindset with customers.
As India unlocks its manufacturing potential across verticals, Naxatra Labs will power the motors underneath.
Four years for the first motor. Four weeks for the next one.
We started building our motor tech stack in 2021, thinking it would only ever go into EVs. Motors are unforgiving machines. Electromagnetics, thermals, structural, vibration, and then application level testing on top of motor level testing. There was no shortcut to buy.
We built it from first principles: design database and EM maps, EM cores, magnet variants, mechanical and thermal, sense and control, integration methods, test and analytics. TRL 1 to TRL 9, plus the production competency to actually make them at volume.
That first EV route took four years.
What we didn't expect was what it unlocked. Once the stack existed, the next vertical wasn't a rebuild. Agriculture, marine, industrial. Today, for a derivative on a proven platform, we go from application spec to a production ready motor in under four weeks.
That is the compounding return on owning your stack instead of assembling someone else's.
350W to 15kW. We're scaling fast inside EV and outside it.
If you're chasing better efficiency, torque density, or fitment in a tight envelope, reach out to me at email/dm here.

We'll build it with you.

9 out of 10 electric vehicles registered in India last month weren't passenger cars.
They were two-wheelers navigating peak-hour traffic, three-wheelers serving daily commutes, and cargo loaders moving goods through city mandis and delivery hubs.

Always the philosophy we operate with @Rainmatterin , it’s almost always the best thing to do to stay back and let the founder go at it. Ask tough questions and challenge them, yes, but do no harm :)
“ A super high bar for a VC is: do no harm.”
@travisk says only 10% of VCs are able to do no harm, and only 1% are actually helpful:
“ An operator who's running a company, if they're good, is a grandmaster of chess.”
”And the VC is a chess enthusiast. They check in on the chess match once every three months and they're trying to make a mark on the world. They have an opinion.”
“And you're like, don't go to Jordan and tell him how to dunk, and definitely don't go to him and tell him how to dribble. But it's hard because everybody has an opinion.”
“The way to think about it is—you're on the Serengeti. If an antelope limps in the Serengeti, the lion will take it down, even if it's not hungry. Can't even fucking help it. It's just what he does. That's kind of the nature of most VCs.”

What's one thing you will start manufacturing right away if you had all the resources in place?

This is such an amazing moment. I look back at this picture and just thinking about how far this team has come. It sometimes looks like it’s easy to iterate in hardware ( as outsiders ) but it’s so difficult and more power to them. Laser focus takes you a long way, couldn’t be prouder ♥️
