Brutal exchange: Tucker Carlson incorrectly tells Jacob Rees-Mogg that Russia has "a much larger economy" than Britain. It doesn't: by GDP, Britain's is about $4.0 trillion and Russia's about $2.5 trillion. Corrected, Carlson retreats to "GDP is not the only measure," then to Russia's "inherent wealth." Rees-Mogg: "Inherent wealth isn't very useful, is it? There are lots of African countries that have huge resources that have never been able to use them." Carlson: "It depends what your timeline is." Rees-Mogg: "Well, if you go for hundreds of years, they haven't used them. Russia has consistently been a poor country in spite of its resources." Carlson: "I don't agree, but I will grant you that."

🚨 Tucker Carlson criticizes Britain for getting "millions of people killed” in World War II. Not Germany. Not Hitler. Britain, for defending "small, basically irrelevant countries." Hitler invaded Poland, and Britain declared war on him. In Carlson's telling, that makes Britain responsible for the dead. Rees-Mogg: "Is it worth trying to stop a dictator having a commanding position in Europe?" In between arguing against any action that would actually stop Hitler, Carlson makes sure to clarify that he is “against Hitler.”

🚨🚨 Tucker Carlson insists three times that Hitler "did not want to go to war with the UK," and twice demands that Jacob Rees-Mogg "acknowledge" it. Hitler "didn't want war" with Britain the way a mugger doesn't want a fight with his victim. He wanted Britain to stand aside while he took Europe. Britain publicly guaranteed Poland's independence in March 1939. Hitler invaded Poland anyway. Rees-Mogg: "I'm very surprised you're verging on defending Hitler." Carlson sarcastically remarks that he is a secret Nazi, then clarifies that he is neither a secret Nazi nor a public Nazi.

🚨 Extraordinary exchange between Tucker Carlson and Jacob Rees-Mogg on Hiroshima. Rees-Mogg says the bombs were justified because they ended the war and saved far more lives than it took. Carlson refuses to weigh the lives saved at all. When Rees-Mogg says WWII couldn't have been fought without innocent people being killed, Carlson's answer is "I don't know, no one tried." Tucker Carlson's two rules of war: 1. Never do anything that could cause the death of an innocent, even if the action would ultimately save more lives. 2. Unless you're Nazi Germany or Russia. In the same interview, Hitler "did not want war," and Russia invading Ukraine is "the state of play for all great powers." He is condescending the whole way through: "So you can behave like an animal once the war starts." "I don't even understand what you're saying." Then he asks, disingenuously, whether it's Christian to kill children. "I'm not Catholic, so I'm not an expert," he says, right after ruling for himself that the bombing fails Aquinas' just-war test.

For those not familiar, I called out Massie years ago. And yeah you need to know he has proposed legislation to withdraw the US from NATO and to “End the Fed,” which are both top Putin wish list items. Here’s my piece from February. america2.news/thomas-massie-…

Thomas Massie has been attacking Trump for the last several weeks; now he's praising him for doing Putin's bidding. Massie, Carlson, MTG are, as we have said at length, Putin's enforcers.
In 2022 I voted against Russia sanctions, pointing out that U.S. citizens would suffer from higher prices. Glad to see Trump came around to that reality this week. We should lift sanctions on all petroleum products, and on raw metals like copper and aluminum.

Maybe not so hard to see why. Flanagan is the Lt. Gov. to Tim Walz, who is quite unpopular and seen as having governed the state poorly. The other data points for this pattern are in gubernatorial races in Oregon and New York.

The contrast between Peggy Flanagan and El-Sayed is interesting. They're both up ~3.5 points in our polling average. But since Minnesota is bluer, Flanagan is actually underperforming the state's partisan benchmark by more.

Kind of striking how persistent the decline in Trump's approval rating has been. There's been mean reversion around news events and economic data, but to a declining rather than steady baseline as in the 1st term.

FLIPR update. The polls might well be wrong. There is, however, no persuasive evidence of a shift back toward Republicans at the moment. natesilver.net/p/nate-silver…

This is part of how this grift works. You say and promote all sorts of right-wing bullshit, but you have to adamantly deny being right-wing despite all countering evidence.

Trumpism is closely tied to a revanchist urge to return to the gold standard, and Judy Shelton is an avatar for that worldview. (Kelton, by contrast, represents an opposing, and not as simplistic, worldview.)

For several months, Tucker Carlson, Thomas Massie, and MTG have attacked Donald Trump. About ten days ago, they cut their attacks dramatically. Now, Trump comes out with a series of pronouncements that soothe Putin. Is it carrot, stick? Who cares? The outcome is the same.

What we are seeing here appears to be Trump trying to deliver on the promises he made to Putin in Anchorage. They have been hectoring him about it for the last month or so, and attacks from Carlson, Massie, and MTG ramped up dramatically — something he and Republicans don’t need just before the midterms.

Reminder that neither Trump nor Musk was ever going to be a reliable ally to Ukraine, and that beliefs to the contrary are an exercise in magical thinking. Reality is asserting itself, once again.

The only thing that would make the live-streamed execution more disgusting is to make it pay-per-view. Are you listening @DeptofWar ? New way to balance out that ballooning Pentagon budget. 😬
