The Gender Summit is currently underway with students from Mashonaland Province. This year's Gender Summit is running under the theme: Student Dignity & the Struggle Against Gender Exploitation on Campus. This is meant to advance a clear argument that meaningful education requires more than access to lecture rooms. Students must be able to learn in conditions that protect their dignity, safety, equality and basic needs including food, accommodation and healthcare.
Education cannot therefore be genuinely emancipatory where students are humiliated, exploited or denied the conditions needed to learn and participate with dignity.

At the heart of the #TransformEducation Agenda lies our firm conviction that further education is a right guaranteed to all citizens by the Constitution and it must be realized. That's why the question of #accessibility matters most.

TRANSFORM EDUCATION📹
President Liberty Hamauswa lays bare to students the status quo in the education sector which necessitates the Transform Education Agenda. He highlights the need for lecturers to receive decent wages to capacitate them as they go about their duties. The #TransformEducation agenda continues as we gear up to deliver policy briefs on the first phase of #availability which recently gave way to phase 2: #accessibility. We demand quality education that is free, accessible and affordable at the very least.

🔵⚪️Did you know Section 75(1b) of Zimbabwe’s Constitution reads:
"1. Every citizen and permanent resident of Zimbabwe has a right to-
b. further education, which the State, through reasonable legislative and other measures, must make progressively available and accessible."
The state must not sleep on it's constitutional obligation to make further education progressively available and accessible. We call for more legislation from the government and it's arms around the realization of Section 75 in letter and spirit.

Over the past two weeks, we have welcomed our first-year students to the National University of Science and Technology (NUST).
But our work with them did not begin at the university gate.
We walked with many of these young brothers and sisters from the application process, through admission, and finally to their journey to NUST. We understood that behind every first-year student is a parent or guardian making enormous sacrifices to secure a better future for their child.
Some of our parents are civil servants, domestic workers, security guards, vendors and ordinary working Zimbabweans who stretch every dollar to keep their children at university.
So when students told us about the cost and conditions of travelling from Harare to Bulawayo, we did not just listen. We acted.
As the Zimbabwe National Students Union (ZINASU) NUST Chapter, we engaged different transport operators and successfully negotiated five luxury coaches to transport approximately 275 first-year students from Harare to Bulawayo.
A journey that could have cost as much as US$30 with some luxury operators was secured at US$20
That means approximately US$10 saved per student, money that may sound small to some, but means something very different to a parent struggling to pay tuition, accommodation, food, books and transport.
For 275 students, that is approximately US$2,750 collectively saved for families.

Bulawayo province roars with the #TransformEducation agenda ⚪️🔵
As we gear into the second phase of #accessibility guided by the 4A framework we demand deliberate governance and subsidisation of higher education to secure equitable access for all.
In our engagements in the Bulawayo province students and stakeholdrs raised several concerns in line with the #availability phase and highlighted the need for adequate investment to improve not only physical infrastructure but also digital infrastructure.
As we direct much attention to the #accessibility phase, we will continue pushing #availability matters as well and continue engaging all stakeholders until education is transformed.

SHAPING THE FUTURE WE WANT FOR AFRICA
The Coordinator, Cde Ashlegh Pfunye, outlined the prevailing socio-political framework and the challenges confronting young people across Southern Africa.
Speaking at the Southern Africa People's Summit, he emphasised the need for a strategic approach, one in which young people and students take charge and enter decision-making spaces unapologetically.
At the centre of transformation and sustainable development lies youth leadership.

🔵⚪️ ZINASU Advances Gender Mainstreaming Agenda at Southern Africa People's Summit
The Zimbabwe National Students Union (ZINASU) was represented at the Southern Africa People's Summit from a strategic gender and welfare position, reaffirming the union's commitment to confronting the structural inequalities that continue to define the region's political economy.
Across Southern Africa, systems remain architected in ways that reward men and prejudice women, sustained by patriarchal societies, values, and traditions. This reality constitutes a fundamental struggle for students and young people across the region, and remains a decisive stumbling block to the attainment of higher education from an equality standpoint.
Represented by the Gender and Welfare Secretary, Cde Gugulethu Yethi-Moyana (@SheCommander1), the union succeeded in steering the discourse towards this structural problem.
She argued, fundamentally, that public policy strategy across the region must ensure that the experiences, needs, and interests of persons of all genders are deliberately considered at every phase of planning, legislation, and programming.
This principle, she noted, must be critically implemented within institutions of higher learning if education is to be genuinely transformed towards gender mainstreaming.
ZINASU extends its appreciation to the youth organisations that submitted their own aspirations, building a youth front that is united and unambiguous about #WhatYouthWant.

UPDATE ON CUT ARRESTED STUDENTS📌
Yesterday 11 of our @ZINASUCUT Chapter members were arrested on baseless charges of disorderly conduct ahead of their semester opening meeting. They were taken to the Chinhoyi Central Police were they were later released around 11pm after the intervention of ZLHR lawyers and were forced to pay fines for admission of guilt.
We stand where we stood, students are not criminals and the rights to freedom of assembly and association must be respected across all campuses in the country. This will not go unchallenged and the police must stop criminalizing peaceful students.
