What a privilege to be part of AOFOG 2026 in Sydney. I'm deeply honoured to have delivered the Shan S Ratnam Memorial Oration, and to be recognised for my work and research in twin pregnancies. This recognition belongs as much to the colleagues, collaborators and families I've had the privilege of working with over the years, as it does to me. Thank you to the Asia & Oceania Federation of Obstetrics and Gynaecology for the warm welcome and a truly outstanding congress. It was wonderful to reconnect with old friends, meet new ones, and share ideas with so many dedicated people working to improve care for mothers and babies across the region. #AOFOG2026 #TwinPregnancy #MaternalFetalMedicine #Obstetrics #WomensHealth

Spina Bifida Awareness Week starts 19 Oct. Open spina bifida is usually picked up at the 20-week scan. From Dec 2026, UK flour will be fortified with folic acid, expected to cut neural tube defects by about 20%. Folic acid supplements still matter. #SpinaBifidaAwarenessWeek

World Menopause Day, 18 Oct. The 2026 IMS theme is Chronic Pain At Midlife. Up to 80–90% of women have some menopausal symptoms; about 25% describe them as severe (British Menopause Society). Midlife pain deserves proper recognition and care. #WorldMenopauseDay

International Day of the Girl. Around 1900, about 1% of UK doctors were women. In 2025 women became the majority of licensed doctors (GMC). Investing in girls today means more clinicians and researchers in women's health tomorrow. #DayOfTheGirl #WomenInMedicine

World Mental Health Day. Up to 1 in 4 women have a perinatal mental health condition (MMHA). Mental health causes, including suicide, lead UK maternal deaths 6 weeks to 1 year after pregnancy (MBRRACE-UK). Listening to women is safe care. #WorldMentalHealthDay

Baby Loss Awareness Week, 9–15 Oct. Of UK babies born in 2024, 3,162 were stillborn or died within 4 weeks (MBRRACE-UK). The rate is 21% lower than in 2013, but inequalities persist. Thank you to bereavement midwives and neonatal teams. #BabyLossAwarenessWeek

Maternal vaccination is changing rapidly, and the next few years could transform how we protect women and babies. This Thursday, I'm delighted to launch a major new six-paper Series in @The Lancet Regional Health – Europe on the future of maternal vaccination. Maternal vaccination has enormous potential to protect both women and their babies from serious infectious diseases, particularly in those vulnerable first months of life. But that potential is not yet being fully realised. That's why the Series calls for a coordinated European approach to maternal immunisation, built on: 🔹 Better integration into antenatal care 🔹 Stronger surveillance 🔹 A clear focus on equity 📍 We'll be unveiling the Series at the 2026 Global Congress: 🗓 Thursday 8 October · 13:00–14:00 CEST 🏛 Beatrix Theatre Hall, Utrecht If you're attending, please join us for the launch and discussion. I hope to see you there. #MaternalVaccination #MaternalImmunisation #MaternalHealth #SMFM2026 #Obstetrics #Vaccines #PublicHealth #Equity

Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Breast cancer in pregnancy is rare (5.4 per 100,000 maternities in a UK study), but symptoms can be mistaken for normal changes. A new lump in pregnancy or while breastfeeding should be checked. #BreastCancerAwarenessMonth

Group B Streptococcus (GBS) is the most common cause of life-threatening infection in newborn babies, causing sepsis, pneumonia and meningitis. In the UK and Ireland, around 1 in 1,000 babies develops GBS infection in the first three months of life. Each year it kills about 50 babies, and around 70 more survive with long-term disability. There is currently no licensed GBS vaccine. GBS Vaccine trials in pregnancy have started worldwide. Healthy pregnant women aged 49 or under may be eligible to join between 24 and 36 weeks. Participants receive one injection, either the vaccine or a saline placebo, allocated at random. Black and Asian women are particularly encouraged to take part, as GBS disproportionately affects Black and Asian babies. Trials like this depend on women choosing to take part. New research offers important reassurance for women who become pregnant after taking GLP-1 medicines such as Wegovy or Mounjaro. Our study of more than 2.1 million pregnancies found no clearly detectable increase in adverse pregnancy outcomes following GLP-1 exposure around conception. These findings are reassuring, but they do not mean GLP-1 medicines are proven safe during pregnancy, and current guidance still applies.
