This week fascinated by singer & songwriter Mabel Batten (1856-1916). Her rich extant archive a source for British queer history and music. Long-term lover of Radclyffe Hall, author of notorious lesbian [some argue trans] novel. Close to composers like Adela Maddison, Ethel Smyth

Came across cellist Beatrice Harrison today (1892-1965). Made the 1st recording of Elgar’s cello concerto (Elgar conducting). Also gave world premiers of Delius’ cello sonata, his 1st violin sonata & (with her sister May) his double concerto (which Delius dedicated to them).

Hi Hazel, if it’s of interest, the lovely @Multitudeofvoyc , is based v. near to you. Their expertise includes female composers in church music (they’ve published scores etc). Hope not presumptuous to sign off with a link to my own fave vocal piece: youtube.com/watch?v=oVfESNE-… 😊

Pianists! Delighted to say Caroline Reinagle’s piano Sonata in A major, Op. 6 (c. 1852) has been uploaded to IMSLP. Described by Nigel Burton as ‘one of the most significant English keyboard works of the 19th century’, I am yet to find any recording of it, @PnoMusSheWrote [1/2]

Alice Mary Smith’s 1870 clarinet sonata is lovely @sdraucker. Performance ed exists as it does for both symphonies, 2 overtures, Quartet in A Major and 3 of her of choral anthems. There are modern recordings of the clarinet sonata and also the symphonies. 😀
I’ve uploaded piano works by Alice Mary Smith (1839-84) to IMSLP - enjoy, pianists! She composed symphonies, choral works & (apparently?) the 1st British clarinet sonata.

Great to see news of the ongoing interest in Pamela Harrison included (as is Grace Williams) by the @BBCPhilarmonic in a programme of five C20 British composers on 17 April. I loved this 2023 album of P. Harrison’s work with @robertplane and the @GouldPianoTrio
The Pamela Harrison revival continues..Thanks once again to the @BBCPhilharmonic, now programming Harrison’s song cycle on poems by Dowson in a studio concert at @MediaCityUK on 17th April, 2pm. Amazing to have Benjamin Hulett and Martyn Brabbins on board bbc.co.uk/philharmonic/event…

Musical Times 1896: warm reception for Cornelie van Oosterzee (1863-1943) conducting her symphonic tone piece in Utrecht. But struggling to find any of her music or many more details about her. But acc. wiki she was a correspondent of C. Schumann, ⁦⁦@sarahfritzwritr⁩ ?
