EU Commission's annual #ruleoflaw report: "inclusion of certain enlargement countries" such as #Serbia "reflects the progress made in their respective accession process or advancement as regards their level of preparedness on rule of law"

I appreciate analogy & have myself used caligula horse analogy in the past but we have to distinguish btw different forms of irregularities/illegalities re PiS judicial appointments. I think English law offers a way forward (usurpers = all neo-"judges" in last resort courts IMO)
"As autocratizing hybrids approach fully authoritarian styles of governance, the international community should not be afraid to treat them more like authoritarian regimes. Similar sanctions may need to be contemplated ..."

EU council due to be presided by mafia state regime built on systemic misappropriation of EU funding & on its way "to becoming Semi-Consolidated Authoritarian Regimes". Well done to @eucopresident & @EUCouncil members for doing nothing to prevent this

Sure but no credible threat/HU would have lost as no legal obligation to unlock funding despite what HU/Comm are claiming to hide dirty political deal. Bottom line: Political considerations have (unlawfully) played key role in decision (see eg recent warning by Court of Auditors)
If this is the key line of reasoning to be used by the Comm, they are going to lose and badly so. Their only hope is rather to claim they have wide discretion in this area to assess measures adopted by HU authorities (no evidence of the kind highlighted in this quote was offered)

"worst offenders" when it comes to democratic decline/autocratisation by the total magnitude of decline acc to latest @vdeminstitute report
EU reaction: here is €10.2bn for you to further misappropriate (@vonderleyen @EU_Commission); happy to have you in charge (@EUCouncil)
Commission told Court of Justice the very opposite of what it is telling us now. Commission also ignoring ECJ ruling of July 2023 re status of disciplinary chamber "decisions". Just irresponsible politicisation of legal processes from VDL Comm & @VeraJourova should know better
Helpful summary of state of play re locked EU funds in respect of #Poland courtesy of @EUauditors. Unlocking expected soon on basis of (sound) #ruleoflaw action plan devised by 🇵🇱 gov but an action plan cannot suffice as compliance required in law & in fact

"However, for countries other than Hungary, the auditors could not always verify the reasons for using one tool rather than another."
Reason for not using Reg 2020/2092 re #Poland purely political as legal case for full activation was overwhelming:
