Africa must not simply consume the technologies shaping tomorrow. We must create them, own them and lead the innovation revolution.
At the opening of the Africa Technology Leadership Conference 2026 in Nairobi, I engaged researchers, innovators, entrepreneurs and global partners under the theme “From Technology Ambitions to Strategic Advantage: Leveraging Science, Research, Innovation and Technology for Diplomacy, Capital and Execution.”
I emphasised the need to turn Africa’s technological ambitions into real economic power by connecting research with investment, industry and global markets, while strengthening data sovereignty and digital resilience.
For Kenya’s young innovators, this means greater access to funding, stronger research partnerships, opportunities to build competitive businesses and quality jobs in emerging industries.
Our young people must not just use the technology of the future. They must be its inventors, creators and owners.
Africa has the talent. Now we must turn that talent into global leadership.
Shaukat Abdulrazak,PhD,EBS retweeted
Africa does not lack innovation. Our challenge is turning innovation into impact. And that requires leadership.
Pleased to contribute to Leadership
Driving Africa’s Technology Progress today, alongside PS Prof. Shaukat Abdulrazak, who delivered an insightful keynote on translating research into commercialisation, entrepreneurship and economic value.
Three priorities shaped my reflections:
🔹 Research to impact: Connecting universities, TVETs, startups and industry to create enterprises, jobs and solutions.
🔹 Adoption to capability: Investing in talent, infrastructure, research and technology diplomacy to strengthen Africa’s agency and shared sovereignty.
🔹 Ambition to leadership: Building institutions, partnerships and governance systems that translate strategies into measurable outcomes.
Africa's young people must be creators and owners of technology, not simply consumers.
Our success will not be measured by the technologies we adopt, but by the capabilities we build, opportunities we create and lives we improve.

Today, I officially opened the @uonbi Research Week 2026, emphasising research excellence, responsible #AI and emerging technologies as drivers of Kenya’s transformation. Through stronger Government–academia–industry partnerships, investment towards 2% of GDP in research and innovation, and science diplomacy, we must turn knowledge into solutions, enterprises, jobs and prosperity. I encouraged setting up of cluster- centres of excellence, research chairs, scaling up of research and innovation above all - Research must transform lives. I congratulate UoN for commitment in research and development @koske_felix @MusaliaMudavadi @ScienceRI_Kenya @nacosti @nrfkenya @KENIAupdates @OfficePCS_KE @pthigo @SingoeiAKorir @AASciences @IAEATC @KEMRI_Wellcome @kalromkulima @kirdi_kenya @Kenya_aist @citizentvkenya

My article, “A New Chapter in Kenya–UK Science Diplomacy,” highlights the need to move beyond knowledge exchange towards co-creation, technology transfer and research commercialisation.
Through stronger Kenya–UK partnerships in AI, biotechnology, health, agriculture and clean energy, we can turn research into innovation, innovation into enterprise, and enterprise into jobs and prosperity. Under the leadership of President @WilliamsRuto As Kenya looks beyond Vision 2030, science, technology and innovation must drive our transformation into a competitive, resilient, knowledge-based economy. @koske_felix @pthigo @SingoeiAKorir @MMakoloo @nacosti @nrfkenya @KENIAupdates @MusaliaMudavadi @OfficePCS_KE @FCDOGovUK @wellcometrust @ScienceRI_Kenya @ISC @KenyaMissionUK @Afroscientist @ucl

Today, honoured to deliver the keynote address virtually at the 1st East Africa Annual Mediator Conference, held under the theme “Harnessing Research and Innovation to Strengthen Mediation, Peace and Sustainable Development in East Africa." Emphasized that effective mediation must be anchored in evidence-based research, data-driven decision-making, digital technologies, and systemic innovation. As our region advances towards greater economic integration and shared prosperity, mediation offers a powerful pathway to resolving disputes, strengthening public trust, promoting trade and investment, and fostering social cohesion. We must move beyond reactive conflict resolution towards proactive, technology-enabled and research-informed approaches that build lasting peace. @ScienceRI_Kenya remains committed to supporting partnerships that translate knowledge and innovative ideas into practical solutions for society. Peace is not merely the absence of contlict; it is the foundation upon which justice, development and prosperity are built. Together, let us transtorm disputes into opportunities for dialogue, collaboration and sustainable development across East Africa. @nacosti @KENIAupdates @nrfkenya #IChooselife @pthigo @PU_Kilifi @UNPeacebuilding

Pleased to host a delegation from Western University, Canada, 🇨🇦 led by the Deputy Provost, Professor Jeff Hutter Vice-President, Research, to explore strategic partnerships in biomedical research, innovation and technology transfer between Canadian and Kenyan institutions. @WesternU
Our discussions focused on developing locally relevant biomedical solutions, strengthening research capacity, and translating scientific discoveries into practical benefits for Kenyan communities. Drawing on Western University’s experience in Uganda, we explored opportunities to establish impactful research collaborations in Kenya building on Mpala Research Centre @AmrefUniversity @uonbi @PU_Kilifi
I underscored the importance of value for money, accountability and measurable outcomes in research investments. I also invited Western University to explore participation in Kenya’s Grand Challenge Initiative, mobilising expertise and resources to address national development priorities through research and innovation.
The Kenya will facilitate a coordinated partnership framework, bringing together relevant Kenyan universities and research institutions to advance joint research, capacity building and resource mobilisation.
Our shared ambition is clear: to strengthen Kenya–Canada cooperation in science, research and innovation, ensuring that research delivers tangible solutions, improves lives and accelerates Kenya’s transition to a knowledge- and innovation-driven economy.
