According to GBD 2021 data, diarrheal diseases caused roughly 434,000 deaths in Sub-Saharan Africa that year, versus about 5,000 in Central/Eastern Europe plus Central Asia and low thousands across Western Europe. Absolute numbers and rates remain far higher in Africa, driven mainly by differences in clean water, sanitation, and healthcare access.
