Insightful reading by @ProjectUnloaded founder and former Joyce Gun Violence Prevention and Justice Reform Program Director Nina Vinik. #GunViolencePrevention
"Like many gun owners, Rick felt that something must change and was deeply concerned about America’s gun violence crisis. But until we confront the basic truth that more guns make us less safe, we’ll continue to be stuck in a cycle of more gun violence and heartbreak."

Every 5 days in America, someone kills their family. Most often, it's a man using a gun.
This statistic comes from my nearly 3 year investigation for @indystar tracking family killings across the nation.
This is American Annihilation.

Given the number of firearms in American society, it is not particularly reassuring whenever law enforcement "assures" the public that there "is no threat to public safety." We need a culture change. thebaltimorebanner.com/commu…

Gun deaths increased greatly during the pandemic, with the gun homicide rate spiking 45%, while the non-gun homicide rate increased 7%. Gun deaths in 2021 were notable not only due to the number of homicides, the highest ever recorded, but also the record-high suicide rate.

When we charted gun manufacturing and imports alongside annual gun deaths going back to 1968, we found that when gunmakers ramped up production, gun deaths rose.

ALT The chart's headline reads "As The Number of New Guns Rises, So Do Gun Deaths" / The subhed reads "Federal data show gun deaths rising and falling alongside new firearm production." It uses ATF and CDC data, and features several annotations, including that 1993 was a record year for both gun deaths and gun production, and that both numbers rose after 2008.

I wanted to know if all these guns flooding the market were driving up gun violence. So I charted annual gun deaths alongside production.
What I found was stunning: The peaks and valleys are nearly identical.
Some years set records for both gun deaths *and* production.
