Day 277 of #365DaysOfMaps. October 4th is Change a Light Day. Shining a light (groan!) on reducing energy use by switching lights off when not needed and changing to low energy bulbs. Time for an infographic with a projection pun.

H.E. Prof. Robert DUSSEY held a virtual meeting with the three creators of the Equal Earth map projection:
- Mr. Tom Patterson, Cartographer at the U.S. National Park Service
- Prof. Bernhard Jenny of Monash University in Australia
- Dr. Bojan Šavrič of Esri in the United States.
The exchange provided an opportunity to acknowledge their pioneering scientific contribution to a more accurate and equitable representation of the world and to the momentum behind the #CorrectTheMap initiative.
Their scientific work has helped foster a broader global conversation on how Africa and other regions of the world are represented on maps.
H.E. Prof. Robert DUSSEY expressed his sincere appreciation to the three visionary geographers for their contribution to this important journey.
The journey continues.

The UN General Assembly has voted to phase out use of the Mercator map, a 16th century projection that is widely used but has been criticized for not representing countries’ sizes accurately.
Here's what that means for education, navigation and public perception.

Following the UN vote on #EqualEarth I built a light #D3 app with sliders for central meridian/reference parallel. I like using 45° instead of the equator; balances distortion, brings the Arctic Circle into view, shows northern landmasses clearly. Try it:
