NOAKHALI MASSACRE, 1946: THE KOJAGORI LOKHKHI PUJA THAT TURNED INTO A NIGHTMARE FOR BENGALI HINDUS Today is Kojagori Lokhkhi Puja, one of the most sacred and emotionally significant days for us Bengali Hindus. Eighty years ago, on this very festival, our ancestors in Noakhali, East Bengal (now Bangladesh), were massacred. The Noakhali Massacre began on 10 October 1946, the day of Kojagori Lakshmi Puja. I do not commemorate Noakhali on 10 October every year. For me, its anniversary is Kojagori Lokhkhi Puja itself. It was on this sacred day that Muslim mobs unleashed violence against Hindu villages. Hindus were murdered, women raped and abducted, houses looted and burned, temples desecrated, and people forcibly converted to Islam. The violence spread across Noakhali and neighbouring Tippera (now Comilla). Golam Sarwar, a former Muslim League legislator, emerged as one of the principal instigators. Entire villages were devastated. Thousands fled their ancestral homes. Contemporary reports described mass conversions, sexual violence, killings and widespread destruction. 1. “RIOT ULTIMATUM: JOIN ISLAM OR BURN” OUR ANCESTORS, TOO, HAD THEIR RALIV, GALIV YA CHALIV MOMENT IN HISTORY. An Associated Press report dated 20 Oct 1946, citing The Statesman, described mass conversions to Islam and the abduction of Hindu women. The report stated that approximately 150,000 people across 400 villages had been affected by the violence. It quoted a Hindu correspondent from Noakhali describing an ultimatum from a mob to convert to Islam or be burned. 2. THE TELEGRAM FROM NOAKHALI A telegram dated 17 Oct 1946, sent from Chaumuhani to the Bengal Provincial Congress Committee, reported that murder, looting, arson and forced conversions were continuing. It warned: “Unconverted people are being slaughtered on mass scale.” The telegram also reported starvation and the failure of local authorities to provide protection, demanding immediate military intervention. 3. GANDHI AND THE WOMEN OF NOAKHALI On 18 Oct 1946, after being informed of the atrocities, Gandhi spoke about the plight of women in Noakhali. Gandhi suggesting that self immolation by taking poison was preferable to surrendering to dishonour. 4. WOMEN CHOSE DEATH OVER SEXUAL VIOLENCE & DISHONOUR In 1946: The Great Calcutta Killings and Noakhali Genocide, Dr. Dinesh Chandra Sinha and Ashok Dasgupta reproduce these statements on page 266. The book also quotes the Hindusthan Standard, which reported that women in Noakhali, desperate to escape sexual violence, had jumped into fires, taken poison or hanged themselves. Gandhi visited Noakhali in Nov 1946 and undertook his peace mission. But the killings, forced conversions, displacement and trauma had already devastated Hindu communities. 5. “QUIT NOAKHALI OR DIE, GANDHI WARNS HINDUS” Even six months later, on 8 April 1947, The New York Times published a report under this headline. It described continuing threats against Hindus, including attempts to burn them alive. The terror had not simply disappeared. 6. THE HUMAN REMAINS OF NOAKHALI One of the photographs attached to this post shows human skeletal remains in Noakhali following the communal violence. It is preserved in the Bridgeman Images archive, sourced from Dinodia, with the description: “A human skeleton at Noakhali East Bengal after the riots between Hindus and Muslims, November 1946.” Archive reference: DND2561152. This is not an illustration. It is an archival photograph documenting the aftermath of the violence. For Bengali Hindus, Noakhali was not simply another communal riot. It was an assault on their lives, their faith, their women, their homes and their right to exist in their ancestral land. And the timing makes it particularly painful. Kojagori Lokhkhi Puja is the night when Bengali Hindu families worship Maa Lakshmi, light their homes and pray for peace, prosperity and the well being of their loved ones. NOAKHALI, 1946. NEVER FORGET.

মূল ইংরেজি লেখা: “UN supported the 2024 coup in Bangladesh; #JamaatEIslami Activists Obstruct Funeral and Burial of Liberation War Veteran Manik Posari in #Pirojpur. In a deeply disturbing incident, activists and supporters of Jamaat obstructed the funeral and burial arrangements of Manik Posari, a veteran of #Bangladesh Liberation War of 1971, in Pirojpur on Saturday. Posari was also the complainant in a crimes against humanity case against former Jamaat-e-Islami leader Delwar Hossain Sayeedi, who was convicted by the Int'l Crimes Tribunal (ICT) in February 2013. Forced to Leave Home in Aug-2024 Following the political upheaval in August 2024, Posari reportedly faced threats and intimidation from Jamaat supporters, making it unsafe for him to continue living at his ancestral home in Pirojpur. He subsequently took refuge in #Gopalganj, where he reportedly remained until his death. Jamaat Activists Oppose State Honours for Freedom Fighter On Saturday, Posari's body was brought from #Tungipara in Gopalganj to the Pirojpur Sadar Upazila Parishad premises around noon, where arrangements had been made to accord him a state guard of honour in recognition of his service during the Liberation War. However, local Jamaat leaders, activists and supporters reportedly gathered at the venue and obstructed the ceremony, opposing the granting of state honours to the deceased freedom fighter. With tensions escalating, police were forced to relocate the body to the Pirojpur Police Lines, where Posari was eventually accorded a guard of honour around 5:00 pm under tight security. Jamaat Supporters Allegedly Fill in Grave Prepared for Burial The intimidation reportedly continued even after the guard of honour. A grave prepared for Posari's burial in his ancestral village of Chithalia was allegedly filled in by Jamaat supporters on Saturday evening. According to Posari's sister, Hasina Begum, the group chanted slogans while filling in the freshly dug grave, effectively preventing the family from proceeding with the burial as planned. The act of desecrating a prepared burial site further heightened fears among family members and local residents. Burial Finally Completed Around 1.00 am Under Police Protection Around midnight, police escorted Posari's body to his family residence. His burial was finally completed approximately an hour later, after the grave had been re-excavated, under tight police security. The atmosphere of intimidation reportedly prevented many of his relatives, friends and well-wishers from attending the final rites. According to accounts of the incident, only his wife and sister were present among his closest family members, alongside police personnel and a small number of local residents. A Disturbing Trend of Intolerance Towards Liberation War Veterans The reported obstruction of Manik Posari's funeral raises serious questions about the security, dignity and treatment of Bangladesh's Liberation War veterans in post-August 2024 Bangladesh, particularly those who participated in legal proceedings concerning crimes committed during the 1971 war. Posari had already reportedly been forced to leave his home because of threats following the August 2024 political upheaval. That he was denied even a peaceful farewell in his ancestral village underscores the gravity of the intimidation faced by him and his family. News: thedailystar.net/news/news/s… ...

Bangladesh: Religious harmony is disappearing in 2026 My Muslim classmates from Jahangirnagar University IBA, who used to call me #Malu (malaun/devil) for years, were silent when the radical Islamist groups were carrying out mob attacks targeting the Hindus after the fall of the Awami League government in 2024. They were silent when extremists were threatening me of dire consequences for protesting the attacks and hate campaigns. They were silent when Durga Puja pavilions and temples were attacked over the last few weeks. They were silent when I prayed for everyone's well-being on the occasion of the Bijaya Dashami today, because the radical Islamists like Mufti Harun Izhar may label them as kafir, fasek, and munafek for mixing with the Hindus during the Puja festivities. This is Bangladesh 2.0, or #Banglastan.

As many as 47.42% Bangladeshi households have fallen into #debt balancing soaring living expenses against stagnant earnings, with rural families hit harder than city dwellers, according to a special survey by the #Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS). According to the Living Standard Survey 2025 conducted by BBS’s #Poverty and #Livelihood Statistics Cell, over the past year, 51.91% households in rural areas, 40.19% in urban areas and 32.11% in city corporation areas were forced to borrow to cover basic living expenses. The LSS 2025 found the average national monthly household income stood at Tk 33,513, while the average national monthly expenses amounted to Tk 35,311. In contrast, the 2022 Household Income and Expenditure Survey found the national average household income to be Tk 32,422 and the national average expenses Tk 31,500. According to Zahid Hussain, a former lead economist of the World Bank’s #Dhaka office, there has been a steady decline in economic #growth in recent years alongside high single-digit or double-digit #inflation that is showing no signs of abating. At the same time, #employment has remained stagnant while real #wages have steadily fallen. He added that the survey data confirms the WB’s macroeconomic projections that poverty rates are on the rise. Zahid noted that the economic slowdown is largely driven by a four-year inflationary surge compounded by acute #energy shortages that have curtailed business operating hours, forced factory closures, and stalled job creation, particularly within the country’s industrial sectors. According to the #IMF’s October 2026 World Economic Outlook, #consumer prices in #Bangladesh are projected to rise by 10.9% in 2027, the highest rate among its South Asian neighbours. The projected #inflation rates for other countries in the region are considerably lower: #Pakistan (9.9%), Bhutan (6.5%), Nepal (5.8%), Sri Lanka (5.4%), #India (4.4%), and the Maldives (2.5%). Bangladesh’s projected inflation rate is more than twice that of India and over four times that of the #Maldives, highlighting the significant cost-of-living pressures facing Bangladeshi households. If these projections materialise, families will face further increases in the cost of essential goods and services, including food, transport, and housing. As a larger share of household income is absorbed by everyday necessities, families will have less money available for savings, education, healthcare, and other expenditures. The widening disparity between Bangladesh and its regional neighbours also raises serious questions about the country's ability to contain inflation, stabilise prices, and protect household purchasing power. With inflation projected to remain in double digits in 2027, easing the cost-of-living burden will remain a major economic challenge for Bangladesh. Muhammad Yunus presided over rampant rights abuses and extrajudicial killings as head of Bangladesh’s Islamist-leaning interim regime. Yet his deep ties to the Clintons have served him well throughout his career. In the latest example, Yunus was presented with the Hillary Rodham Clinton (HRC) Award by Hillary Clinton herself at Georgetown University. Yunus pioneered microcredit for which he and the Grameen Bank he headed jointly received the 2006 Nobel Peace Prize, after Bill Clinton lobbied for him. In presenting the prize, the chairman of the Norwegian Nobel Committee recalled Clinton’s 2002 statement: “Dr. Yunus is a man who long ago should have won the Nobel Prize and I’ll keep saying that until they finally give it to him.” The chairman then added, “Now Clinton will no longer need to remind us.” The award also carried an unmistakable geopolitical message. The committee chairman expressed the hope that “this peace prize will represent a possible approach to the Muslim part of the world” amid the post-9/11 tendency to “demonize Islam.” He added, “It is an important task for the Nobel Committee to try to narrow the gap between the West and Islam.” The Nobel Peace Prize has, to this day, remained largely a geopolitical instrument, with the Norwegian Nobel Committee often using it to advance a particular political worldview under the mantle of peace. Yunus’s prize, and the committee chairman’s own explanation of its purpose, offered a revealing example.

LeT-linked Mufti Harun Izhar and other extremist leaders meet President Mirza Fakhrul A delegation of Islamic clerics and figures associated with #Hefazat-e-Islam Bangladesh met President Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir at Bangabhaban on Monday afternoon. The meeting, described officially as a courtesy call, has raised alarms among secular voices and minority rights advocates over the apparent normalization of hardline militancy and extremism under the current political climate. The delegation was led by Hefazat-e-Islam Bangladesh’s central organizational secretary, Maulana Mufti Bashirullah. It included Joint Secretary General Mufti #HarunIzhar—a figure long linked by counter-terrorism agencies and open-source reports to Lashkar-e-Taiba networks, past alleged plots targeting diplomatic missions, and Taliban-aligned ideology—along with Maulana Mir Idris Nadvi, Maulana Rafiqul Islam (imam and khatib of the Prime Minister’s Office mosque), Maulana Faisal (coordinator of the National Imam-Khatib Council), and Maulana Afsar Mahmud (publicity secretary of #Khatme Nabuwat Bangladesh). President’s Press Secretary Md. Sarwar Alam confirmed the meeting to BSS. During the discussion, the president recalled the “unspeakable torture” and “unbearable imprisonment” suffered by prominent ulema during the previous “fascist” rule. He urged unity in nation-building after the fall of the previous regime, warned against any return of authoritarian misrule, and called for vigilance so that “no one creates confusion in the name of religion.” He noted that the late President Ziaur Rahman and former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia had shown great respect for Islamic scholars. Ziaur Rahman inserted “Bismillahir Rahmanir Rahim” into the Constitution and included “absolute trust and faith in Almighty Allah” among the fundamental principles of state policy. The president described himself as “completely non-political” yet pledged to monitor any government actions that might harm Islamic values and Sharia. The delegation requested that the Arabic-language skills, networking abilities, and personal connections of the country’s ulema be used to expand trade, attract investment, and secure grants from oil-rich Middle Eastern countries. Observers note that the meeting occurs as Hefazat leadership appears to be distancing itself from Jamaat-e-Islami while aligning with the BNP to advance its revised charter of demands (previously a 13-point list focused on stricter Islamic governance, blasphemy punishments, and restrictions on minorities and cultural practices). Under the new political dispensation, figures previously treated as militants have gained access to the president, prime minister, and ministers, with efforts underway to reframe them as “Islamic scholars” deserving of release from detention. Mufti Harun Izhar, in particular, has drawn sustained scrutiny. Intelligence-linked reporting and past arrests have associated him with LeT, HuJI-B, and the Taliban in the Lalkhan Bazar Madrasa bomb incidents and radicalization of madrasa networks. He has been accused of spreading communal hatred under the banner of dawah, including recent public statements targeting Hindus (such as warnings that they would be “silenced” in Chittagong) and campaigns against ISKCON and other minority institutions, for announcing the setting up of mosques near temples and carrying out a flag campaign to promote al-Qaeda and the Taliban. Khatme Nabuwat Bangladesh, represented in the delegation, has a documented history of aggressive, sometimes violent campaigns demanding that the Ahmadiyya community be declared non-Muslim, alongside calls to restrict or ban Sufi shrines, jatra folk theater, and Baul songs as un-Islamic. Rights groups and secular commentators argue that granting such high-level access risks mainstreaming jihadist networks and ideological patrons of #extremism. #jihad #militancy #mobocracy #TouhidiJanata

Two Bangladeshi citizens, Nazrul Islam Abdul Basir and Siti Akhtar, were executed in Saudi Arabia on 14 October. Their families, their government and their "Bangladesh" consulate appear to have learned of it only after it was done. Whatever one thinks of the alleged act, this should outrage anyone who believes in due process. Two lives were taken through a process no one outside the Saudi system was allowed to see. Seven things about this execution demand scrutiny and accountability: ONE. Saudi Arabia failed to notify the Bangladesh consulate twice. The first failure came at arrest. Under Article 36 of the Vienna Convention on Consular Relations, a detained foreign national must be told without delay of the right to consular notification and access, and there is no sign either of them ever was. The second failure came after the executions. Article 37 requires the host state to inform the consulate of a foreign national’s death without delay, and the Bangladesh Consulate in Jeddah says it was not told. TWO. It was a death sentence for a non-lethal offence. The sentence was ta’zir, a discretionary punishment. No religious text required death here; a judge chose it. That falls far short of the “most serious crimes” threshold set by the Arab Charter on Human Rights, which Saudi Arabia has ratified, and by the UN death-penalty safeguards. THREE. We don’t know what legal representation they had. Did each have a lawyer? A Bangla interpreter? Did the conviction rest on a confession, and how was that confession obtained? FOUR. We don’t know if the woman’s consent was examined. The Saudi statement does not even confirm whether the two were married. FIVE. The families were left in the dark. Were they told beforehand? Where are the bodies, and will they be returned? SIX. Our consulate was absent for months. The Saudi statement says “the judgment became final after being upheld by the relevant judicial authority, and a Royal Order was issued to enforce the sentence.” That describes an arrest, detention, investigation, trial, appeal and royal confirmation, which takes months, not days. What was the Bangladesh consulate doing through all of it? SEVEN. The Foreign Ministry’s response is a disgrace. It cannot excuse itself by saying it was not contacted. Article 31 of our Constitution guarantees every citizen the protection of the law “wherever he (or she) may be.” The state has a positive duty to protect its people abroad, above all the wage earners whose remittances keep our economy afloat. Treating them this way is inexcusable. This is part of a bigger pattern. Bangladesh's Foreign Ministry is usually quick to issue scathing statements, for example over Sheikh Hasina’s press event in Delhi or the heckling of Professor Yunus. Here it has been strikingly timid. Abuse of Bangladeshi workers across the Middle East is widely reported, yet we have rarely seen real backbone from the ministry or our Gulf missions. Dhaka should do four things now: 1. Demand the full case file and judgments from Riyadh, and publish them. 2. Secure the return of the remains to the families. 3. Audit every Bangladeshi currently detained or on death row in the Gulf. 4. Negotiate and put in place a robust arrangement for automatic consular protection in all such circumstances. Two citizens are dead. The least they deserve is the truth about how and why. #Bangladesh #SaudiArabia #HumanRights #DeathPenalty #ConsularRights #MigrantWorkers #DueProcess #ViennaConvention

Family of Shamim, Lynched by an #Islamist Mob Over Alleged #Blasphemy in Satkhira, Alleges Involvement of Local #Jamaat, Reports @bbcbangla. Wahiduzzaman Shamim was killed following repeated attacks by an Islamist mob on the night of 13 October in Debhata, #Satkhira, over allegations that he had insulted #Islam. While the incident was initially portrayed as a spontaneous outburst of anger by religious fundamentalists, Shamim's family has alleged that local leaders and supporters of #JamaatEIslami played a central role in what they describe as a "planned attack." Speaking to BBC Bangla, Shamim's brother, Tausif Rahman Shagor, alleged that the initial attack on Shamim, which took place at the family's home, was instigated by local Jamaat leaders and workers who circulated an allegedly fake audio recording to incite the mob. Law Enforcement's Response Raises Serious Questions Shamim, who reportedly had a longstanding history of psychological difficulties, was subjected to three separate attacks before his death. Following the initial assault at his home, he was attacked again by a mob at a local doctor's chamber. Police subsequently rescued him in an injured condition and transported him to the Upazila Health Complex, where he was attacked for a third and final time. The circumstances surrounding these repeated attacks raise serious questions about the failure of law enforcement authorities to protect Shamim, particularly after the police had already intervened and taken him into their care. How was a man who had already survived two mob attacks allowed to be assaulted a third time, this time at a healthcare facility, after being rescued by the police? Shamim's family has therefore, understandably questioned why the authorities failed to prevent the subsequent attacks, despite clear and repeated threats to his life. Further undermining confidence in the police response is the reported failure to register a criminal case as of the night of 15 October, despite allegations that several of the attackers were locally known and identifiable. The allegations of organised political involvement, the repeated failure to protect a vulnerable individual, and the apparent delay in initiating criminal proceedings demand an immediate, impartial, and transparent investigation. No accusation of blasphemy can justify mob violence, much less murder. The state's obligation to protect life does not disappear when an individual is accused of offending religious sentiments. 18.1 Million People in #Bangladesh Projected to Face Acute #Food Insecurity as #Inflation and Rising Living Costs Squeeze Households. An estimated 18.1 million people in Bangladesh could face high levels of acute food insecurity between Sep and Dec 2026, up from 15.3 million during May–Aug, according to projections by the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (@FAO). Citing an analysis by the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC), the UN agency also warned that approximately 787,000 people could face emergency-level food insecurity, reflecting the severity of the country's growing food security challenges. Wages Fail to Keep Pace With Inflation According to the Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS), general inflation rose to 8.34% in September, up from 8.26% in August, while food inflation increased from 7.02% to 7.22%. Meanwhile, the national wage rate index grew by just 7.90%, falling behind general inflation. This widening gap between wage growth and rising prices indicates an erosion of purchasing power, particularly among households already struggling to meet basic expenses. For millions of Bangladeshis, the consequences are increasingly evident: incomes are failing to keep pace with the rising costs of food, housing, transport and other necessities. Higher Fuel Prices Add to the Burden The situation has been further aggravated by rising fuel prices. On Sep 21, the #BNP Gov increased the prices of diesel, petrol, octane and kerosene by Tk 20 per litre, adding to transportation and distribution costs across the economy. Traders have cited higher transport costs as a major factor behind recent increases in the prices of household essentials, including rice. The fuel price hike has also directly increased daily commuting expenses, placing additional financial pressure on working families. Lower- and Middle-Income Households Hit Hardest A recent report by @DhakaTribune highlighted how lower- and middle-income households in #Dhaka are bearing the brunt of the cost-of-living crisis. Visits to wet markets across the capital revealed that financial pressures are increasingly influencing not only what people buy, but also how much they can afford and what they eat, both at home and outside. Professor Selim Raihan, executive director of the South Asian Network on Economic Modeling (SANEM), warned that persistent inflation was placing substantial pressure on household purchasing power. As a result, many families are being forced to reduce food consumption, compromise on nutritional quality and make other sacrifices simply to manage their daily expenses. Government's Policy Priorities Come Under Scrutiny With food, housing and transportation costs rising simultaneously, questions are mounting over the government's response to the growing cost-of-living crisis and its spending priorities. Nazneen Ahmed, executive director of the Centre for Policy Dialogue (CPD), argued that the government should have expanded subsidised food distribution programmes, including Open Market Sales (OMS), to protect vulnerable households from inflation. Instead, she observed, the opposite appears to be happening. At the same time, questions are being raised over the government's decision to prioritise massive expenditure commitments, including the proposed new National Pay Scale for civil servants. The Cabinet of Prime Minister #TariqueRahman recently approved salary increases ranging from 100% to 142% for government employees, the largest pay revision of its kind. The proposed increases are expected to impose an additional annual burden of Tk 105,580 crore (approximately US$8.6 billion) on the public exchequer. While not objectionable per se, the scale and timing of such non urgent expenditure raise serious questions about fiscal priorities, particularly when millions of citizens are struggling to afford adequate food and basic nutrition. The #Bangladesh #Puja Udjapan Parishad (BPUP) has reported 34 incidents of idol vandalism, attacks on temples, and related violence ahead of #DurgaPuja, raising serious concerns about the safety and security of Bangladesh’s #Hindu #minority community. The incidents were reported across several districts, including #Sylhet, Rajbari, Panchagarh, Netrokona, and Tangail. The BPUP also documented attacks, vandalism, and looting targeting Hindu homes, businesses, and places of worship in Sunamganj. Despite the 34 reported incidents, arrests have been made in connection with only 11, raising further questions about the effectiveness of law enforcement responses and accountability for #violence against religious #minorities. News: thedailystar.net/news/crime-… Separately, another prominent minority rights organisation, the Bangladesh Hindu Buddhist Christian Unity Council (BHBCUC), documented 141 incidents of religiously motivated violence against minority communities between July and September 2026. News: aninews.in/news/world/asia/b… Taken together, these findings paint a deeply troubling picture of the continuing vulnerability of religious minorities in Bangladesh. They also raise urgent questions about the #BNP Government's ability and willingness to ensure their safety, prevent communal violence, and bring perpetrators to justice. ... @FOREF_EU @nadinemaenza @NazilaGhanea @OHCHRAsia @hrw @amnestysasia @ESandersFCDO @USCIRF @StateIRF @Chellaney @CJBdingo25
