On July 28, the American Communist Party joined a coalition of Orange County community organizations at the Garden Grove Council Chamber to rally for a moratorium on GKN Aerospace. On May 21, a 7,000-gallon tank of methyl methacrylate overheated, threatening a catastrophic explosion forcing the evacuation of 50,000 residents. As the investigation continued, residents were further incensed when it was discovered that the same chemicals that had been poisoning their community were also being used to make canopies for F-35 fighter jets currently bombing Gaza. Last week, members of ACP California used donations from our supporters to build and distribute 14 air filters (corsi-rosenthal boxes) for the people of Boyle Heights. Immediately surrounding the cold storage facility, a dense community of working-class Americans and their families are forced to continue their daily lives as normal despite the major ecological and health disasters happening across the street from their homes. Last weekend, members of ACP California returned to the Mero Youngblood Community Garden in North Sacramento to help prepare the soil and plant new herbs, fruits, vegetables, and flowers for its inaugural weekend. Community gardens bring food sovereignty to people living in food deserts, independent of the established supply chains, giving these communities the power to control their own lives. Los Angeles is so large and geographically diverse that food deserts often exist in the region, sometimes mere miles away from a food oasis. But if an abundance of nutritious food exists only miles away from almost any given area in LA, why do 25% of households face food insecurity and poor nutrition? The lack of access to affordable, nutritious food is a symptom of vast economic disparities and lack of adequate economic planning in Los Angeles county. That’s why the ACP is working inside these communities to promote food sovereignty, giving working people the power to fill the gaps where the government has failed.

On May 11, 1894 workers at the Pullman Palace Car Company in Chicago went on strike. Company leadership consistently dismissed and ignored worker grievances. The last straw came when a workers' delegation presenting grievances to company leadership were unjustly fired. In a show of solidarity, the American Railway Union (ARU) began a boycott of Pullman cars on June 27. The boycott brought railroad traffic in the Midwest to a standstill as 125,000 workers across 29 railroads refused to handle trains using Pullman train cars. Alarmed by the growing strength of the strike, company representatives leveraged their government contacts to secure a federal court injunction prohibiting the ARU from continuing the boycott. On July 4, President Grover Cleveland dispatched troops to Chicago. The arrival of troops only angered strikers, and resulted in national guardsmen shooting into a crowd of workers, killing thirteen and wounding dozens. The intervention of the federal government eventually led to the defeat of the strike by September. Corporations fear an organized working class, and weaponize the government to neutralize national strikes such as the 2022 railroad labor dispute under President Biden. Although a strike was averted in 2022, federal intervention on behalf of corporations demonstrates the potential leverage of transportation workers in railroads, airlines, and trucking.

Los Angeles has a trash problem, and sadly, schools are not spared. Sidewalks have become dumping grounds in many neighborhoods and city services are struggling to keep up. The American Communist Party has returned to RFK Community School to clear the sidewalks of trash. ACP cadre picked up wrappers, boxes, bottles, and even removed biohazards such as rotting food and used needles. This work in Los Angeles is an example of the growing number of city residents who take initiative to step in where city officials have failed.
